SB Extigy CMSS
« on: March 14, 2004, 10:03:14 am »

Hi!

I am using MediaCenter with a SB Extigy Card an I was wondering how I can get the build in CMSS feature to work. CMSS is described like this:

Creative's CMSS technology can apply 3D positional filtering to a two-channel output to "enhance" two-channel playback, or remix that two-channel audio source into a 5.1 digital or analog output for those types of speakers.

I've been testing CMSS against the "5.1 channels -- JRSS 2.0 (tm)" setting from the DSP Studio Output Format Settings. I think CMSS sounds much better (the sound on the rear speakers sounds very distorted through JRSS).

Problem is: When I am playing music with MediaCenter the CRSS seems to be ignored, i.e. no sound on the rear speakers whatsoever. I had the same thing with WinAmp2 (not using any Nullsoft products anymore), and I was able to change it when I set output to be "hardware accellerated". How can I set this in MediaCenter?

Thanks for the help!

Try to change the "output mode" in Tools\Options\General. I had this problem as well, it worked for me, if I remember right  :P

Hi!

It would have been helpful if you posted to what setting you set your system. With a big amount of trial-and-error I figured that it works quite OK when Tools>Options>Playback>Output is set to "Direct Sound" and then Settings>Channels (if in stereo) is set to "Left Front + Right Front".

However... this is not really the method I would have preferred to have (... which is putting the audio directly through to the soundcard and not having it mangled by software a few times).

If there is any other approaches to this... I gladly accept any hints  ;)

Ciao

I have an Extigy that I no longer use. I switched to an Audigy 2 ZS and HAD to put my output to 5.1 to get MC to function without distortion.
But if I remember correctly, I set the playback options to Direct Sound > "primary sound driver" and the Output Format in the DSP studio set to "source bit depth" and "source number of channels". The Extigy handled the splitting to 5.1 very well.
It's important that the Windows settings don't conflict. That's one reason to use "primary sound driver" instead of the Extigy from the pulldown but you still must use Windows Control Panel to set it up. How this is done depends on the OS.

One point of confusion which may void this advice:
MY Extigy has no card. It is strictly a USB unit.
