Acquire Images Bug
« on: April 15, 2004, 12:34:53 pm »

When acquiring my Easter images, I experienced a terrible bug:  after a handful (11 to be exact) of images transferred, the dialog box hung at 20% of a transfer.  Though I waited for thirty minutes, it didn't go away.  MC was still a little responsive, but I couldn't access any pull-down menues.  I had to end the process from the Task Manager.

The remaining 50 or so photos are gone from my camera!

How could this have happened?  What an ugly bug...  I've lost some priceless photos.

I think this also shows why a "real" status bar (i.e. xx of XX photos transferred) would have been helpful - then I'd know exactly how many photos I was trying to transfer.

Camera battery failure?

Did you try searching for the images?

I have to say that I am a bit paranoid about checking the little delete files from source option box- could it include a failsafe warning - on hitting acquire? Not that I am saying that you had it set - it just makes me nervous!

I think the all important thing to do is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to the camera memory and take or send it to a file recovery specialist. Some do a no-charge if no-recovery deal (But lots if they do succeed  :()

We've never had a report like this, but it is possible that the WIA code has an error.  It doesn't get used as often.  We will take a look at it.  I'm sorry if it was our fault.

The camera is plugged into a docking station, so I don't think the battery could be a problem.

Browsing the camera through Explorer shows it as empty - as does the camera itself if I try to preview images.

Yes.  I did have it set to delete the files after acquiring.

Good idea...  I've removed the SD card and I'll see what I can find by way of recovery.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you.  I appreciate your apology (if it is indeed a MC problem).  I'll do some testing to see if I can reproduce the error.

As an aside, I use the WIA drivers because it's the only way to get MC to recognize the camera for acquisition.

Our guess is that transferring started to fail for some reason (hardware?) but MC didn't detect it and still deleted the images from the source.  Sorry if that's the case.

Next build has these changes:

Changed: More robust error handling in WIA image acquisition in case of a driver / hardware error.
Changed: Improved progress reporting during WIA image acquisition with cancel button.

Please test the next build as much as possible and let us know if you can reproduce any type of problem.

Thanks IlPadrino.

If the pics are on a memory card you could put the card into a card reader so it shows up as a drive.  Then use a unerase utility like norton on the card to get the files back.

My wife and I got married in Fiji.  A day before the cremony we visited a village and took a bunch of pics.  I dumped the pics into a laptop we had with us and then deleted the card in the camera.  Only the pics never got transferred (somehow??) to the laptop.  It looked like we lost them for good.

I didn't use that memory card the rest of the trip and when we got home I did an unerase and got all the pics back!

We DID still get married, but after she found out what I did, it was close...   :D

Thank you, too.  I couldn't imagine any better response.  I'll gladly do some thorough testing on the next build.

Yeah...  I guess I should invest in an SD reader.

I lost a lot of pictures on a Compact Flash card a while ago and managed to get them all back by running the standard Windows scan disk utility on the card.  Other people have reported the same.  Usually when these things disappear it's just the index that is broken and the data is still intact.  There is probably no need to spend more money buying something like Norton Utilities.  Good luck, anyway - I feel your pain.

Thanks to the advice here, I've recovered all my photos.  I picked up one of these:  http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=525453&Sku=L61-3336%20P&CatId=379.  Well worth the price to get my pics back!

Thank you JRiver for your very quick and proactive response to the problem.  I've transferred hundreds of photos using the latest version and I haven't run across a problem, so it would seem the changes worked.  (I did try some transfers with an older version and I did come accross an occasional freeze which resulted in a loss of photos.)

I did learn a good lesson, though:  better safe than sorry when the photos are important.  I'll now try to remember to uncheck the "delete photos" option and verify the transfer was successful when they're important.

I also like the new transfer count...  would it be possible to show the total number of photos to be transferred (i.e. Transferring xx of XX)?
