Ok, I have received a nice gift of a portable player that supports flac files.

Currently I use APE with APL files to point to the selections within the APE file. In this way I have the entire CD in a single APE file and use the APL files to play single selections from it. Works very well, easy to create other formats when I need to.

FLAC compresses ok, and with the nice flac input plugin I can listen via MC.

The problem is that I see no way to 'index' the flac file as I do with APE.

Any ideas?

APL's are the ape version of a Cue Sheet (which is what flac uses). EAC can generate them but MC can't yet nor does it know what to do with them (I didn't think APL's were directly supported either...not the case...eh?). What are you using to do the whole CD rips and generate the apl?

I use EAC to rip the complete CD and generate a cue file.
Then I use MakeAPL from the Monkey's Audio package to generate the APL files.

And, on reflection, I'll just stick with this method. It is very nice to have the individual selections easily available for listening and MC does a great job in transcoding to whatever format I wish for the portable. Here in China, the average background noise is somewhat louder than an anvil chorus. Why have lossless files, take the capacity hit, and hear no real difference?

Plus, I just like the APE format it has a lot of plusses, and with the APL support in MC, it's the best lossless solution for me.

By the way, the APL files in MC are treated just as any selection. I can tag them, add images, analyze, etc. For those with lots of disk space (and who doesn't nowadays?), give it a try when you are ripping new additions to your library.

The problem with CUE sheets is that they don't support flexible tagging.  Also, some programs don't understand one file being multiple playable files.

Both of these problems are solved with APL files.
