MC Crashing with copy protected CD?
« on: April 26, 2004, 10:37:29 am »

I was trying to rip the CD R.Kelly "the R. in R&B Colection #1"  and the CD Ginuwine "the Bachelor" and MC would crash as it tried to start the ripping process.
My guess is that these CD's have some copy protection on them... so my question... is there a way to get around it? If not is there going to be a lot more disc that have this protection on them?

Thanks

When it crashes, what error does it say?
Does the cd or case have the Compact Disc Logo?

it does not give an error message, it instantly closes.

One of the CD's have the Compact Disc Logo, the other does not

Try this...

Hold down the shift key when inserting the CD. If it has copy protection, It will most likely be bypassed.

Try to rip.

If MC is just shutting down, It sounds like there is a problem, Try installing the latest version and trying again.

Can you rip other cd's?

Yes, I have gone through my collection of about 100 CD's and find MC to be great!! I only had troubles with two CD's. I am still able to rip other CD's
I am currently running MC ver 10.0.

With most Copy Protection:

The copy protection is ernabled when auto run is activated.

In Some cases, some drives will NOT copy these.

I had 2 cd's that were protected that MC or anyother program would not rip. I replaced the drived with a Plextor and these copy fine...

I would suggest using another program to see if it rips, If it does then it's a problem with MC.

I am having a similiar issue.

on one cd The high llamas - Buzzle Bee I put it into the drive to rip and it then spits it out and tells me the ripping proccess is complete.

The second cd is The flaming lips - Fight Test EP, this cd will ripp up to track 3 and then the ripping proccess drops to like .01 percent and hangs.  It has no scratches and all tracks after 3 exhibit this issue.

Same issue with both cds using EAC and nero.  Anyone have any ideas how to get them to rip.

Thanks,
Kain

A Copy Protected Audio CD won't even spin in a computer.

Some Audio CDs encode into the computer an anti ripping code to prevent illegal ripping.

Just listen to your audio CD in a stereo :)

That's not entirely correct.... Some CD drives handle Copy Protected Cd's with no problems.
Also if you can't play the cd, try disableing auto run, then insert the cd. This will byepass some protected cd's.

The fact is; some companies "Illegaly violate rules"
there told not to do it but, they do it anyway.

This means more money for the company.

for example, Philips manufactures CD-RW drives that will copy copy protected audio CDs why?

Because they dont care :)

Philips won't get in trouble because MacroVision is unaware of that.

How about 321 studios they release DVD X Copy
which alows you to make a back up of any DVD
EVEN with Copy protection.

Is this program breaking any laws?

I'll let you guys to decide.

But the DVD-RW records any Discs even with CP on lt.

This is illegal. But, some companies don't care.
