Convert on play feature request for MC 10?
« on: May 01, 2004, 05:43:43 pm »

Here's a new feature I'd like to see for MC 10.
For those of us with large collections of files, while we can convert audio files through MC 10, it would be nice to have an option that basically says "When someone plays this file, before playing it, convert it to format XXX and then play it."  As an alternative, how about an idle task in MC 10 that can walk through the library doing mass conversions updating the library as it goes.

Common items might be WMA to MP4 or MP3 to WMA.

id strongly advise against transcoding lossy formats (mp3, wma etc) as lossy > lossy = very lossy

transcoding lossless formats (eg. flac to ape) is fine as is lossless >
lossy... (ape to mp3)

-----

if you need to have certain files in a different format (eg. for a handheld device) i'd rerip if possible, if not then transcode them and store them seperately from the original files and only play the better quality original ones when using MC but use the transoded files for the handheld.
