MC very slow on displaying files in directory
« on: May 06, 2004, 07:52:23 am »

I have a directory on my PC with videoclips, songs and other stuff. Whenever I want to use MC to either play a song or a videoclip I click on the directory for a list. It takes forever to display all the available files in the directory.
I even have time to start up the native XP explorer to search for the file I want to play.

Starting up a videoclip from the explorer also takes forever and my PC is "unusable" for about 10 to 15 seconds. When starting from the explorer it uses MC to play the file. Starting up a file with another application works like a dream. It happens with all kinds of videofiles.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong  ?

Try to isolate if it's certain files slowing MC down.

Also, switch the video playback engine in Options > Playback > Video and see if it helps the playback lag.

And make sure you aren't switching resolutions when going to fullscreen.

If I browse my PC with MC it goes slightly slower then with the explorer. Only if the directory contains many files or pictures then it slows down a lot with MC.

Video playback is not full screen but within MC. No screen resolution changes.

This directory I'm reffering to contains 287 files and about 230 are musicclips or short video's. The rest are mp3's or temporary Kazaa Lite files. Haven't isolated the types of video. As far as I can see all types are present in the directory

MC slows down. Progress bar of the currently playing song stops and it takes almost 2 minutes before the system is finished reading the directory.

Maybe because a few video's are rated X  :P

MC will take longer to look at a directory than explorer, but that's because it has to open each file and check its type, length, resolution, etc. Explorer doesn't care. Why don't you use MC's database functions and import the files? That way, it wouldn't need to query all the files each time.

Do you have any network files imported into MC? Starting MC with imported files that aren't available on the network can be very slow.
