Can MC Play DTS CDs and Other Multichannel Music Formats
« on: April 12, 2004, 08:28:44 am »

Are there any plans to improve the support for DTS CD and other multichannel music files?

I have a large collection of DTS CDs and number of DTS files created from my Quad LPs. They generally work fine via SPDIF conenction to an external decoder by it would be nice to have MC try to recognise the stream and use PowerDVD, WinDVD or some other filter (if present) to decode for direct analogue output.

One of my client PC have a high-quality multichannel sound card that beats my Lexicon MC12B decoder. It works great with two channel music but for DTS and AC3 encoded music I can't use it.

Considering that MC already plays DVD with either AC3 or DTS sound handling just the music element should be a trivial extension.

Anyone tried playing Sting's Brand New Day DTS CD.

Many other DTS CD are available. For example check what is alavilable on Amazon.

More complete list is on the DTS Online.

Why is J River ignoring these music CDs?

They play just fine if you use ASIO over SPDIF to a receiver for decoding.  It's the same as a CD player over SPDIF to a receiver.

If you mean decoding in software and then pumping out the tunes over multichannel analogue, that'd be somewhat difficult as MC would have to figure out somehow that it's actually DTS-encoded PCM.  Since MC10 doesn't have any internal decoding of DTS without the use of 3rd party filters, the practicalities of what you're asking are questionable.  In the interim, why not just use PowerDVD or WinDVD which, because they use their own filters, are designed to recognize the streams and decode/play through analogue.
