Playback Skips, Bad Rips, Low Burn Speeds, DMA PIO
« on: May 09, 2004, 10:44:07 am »

I wish I had found this article a year ago:

DMA Reverts to PIO - http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm

A couple days ago media center at home started skipping for no reason.  This fixed it good.  I now see this is why I bought two extra cd-drives over the last couple years.  The drives worked perfect when first installed, but then just crapped out slowly over time.

I have not been able to rip any cds for over a year at my work W2000 machine and updating tags takes several minutes per file.  I'm positive this is the problem there also.  I can't wait to get to work on Monday.

Here's a pretty sparce article on it at Microsoft:

Yeah, that is a pretty common problem, it seems.  Happened on my laptop once time, and I was getting bad/aborted CD burns because of it.  And what's worse, I couldn't even set it back to DMA mode in Device Manager.  I managed to find an article on the Web that helped me fix it, though.  Gotta love M$....
