Play VCD & SVCD ?
« on: May 06, 2004, 11:01:57 pm »

Does MC play CDs that are VCD & SVCD???

It would also be cool if it could play them in "ripped" format (bin & cue)... this would save a ton of time in encoding into MPEG & AVI.

MC can play MPEG 1 & 2 files, but I don't know whether it would recognise the (S)VCD file structure.  You could just navigate to the video files and play them directly.  I don't know what you mean by "bin & cue", but MC does recognise the DVD file structure and will happily play them off the HD.

Bin & cue files are a standard format that CD's & DVD's are ripped to using most ripping software. So if MC read/played those files you would not need to encode the ripped media into MPEG & AVI.

Have you tried using Daemon Tools to load the image and play that via MC?

I just put a (S?)VCD in the drive, MC didn't have a clue what it was. Windows Media Player knew what it was, said it could play it, and had an "unknown error", and didn't. WinDVD played it just fine.

Apparantly there's some room for improvment for Media Center, as even a $39 Apex will play these...

My 6 yr old set-top Pioneer DVD player will play (S)VCDs but MC10 will not even recognize them.

Media Center can play VCD and SVCD. The only problem is that it cannot play it straight from the disc without some minor human interaction as it don't recognise the disc.

VCD and SVCD files are stored as .dat format and Media Center won't import them in that format. All you need to do is to change the format to .mpg and it will work just nice with any VCD files.

If you are playing from the disc, I think you will have copy the .dat files from the VCD over to your hdd and change the extension to .mpg before it will play.

I have been asking for VCD support for a long time (since 9.0) but well, not much has been done with it yet.

Seems to me that (S)VCD playback (from CD/DVD) should be a BASIC feature... maybe someone from the dev team can chime in?

I'm looking for an all-in-one solution, and MC10 seems to miss some basic stuff?  :-\

MC will play VCD if you play it in the way I suggested earlier. But if you want MC to play VCD like how it does with DVDs, it cannot.

It don't support VCDs format.

No need to play it as hardware players do. Simply show all items of VCD as entries for playlist and play them. It so simple to implement. Also it is possible to show names of VCD tracks instead of AVSEQXX.dat as it implemented in WinMediaPlayer

It is not that that the "workarounds" you are suggest are difficult but I can walk to work to... but I bought a truck for a reason.

I think is is VERY FAIR to ask that MC10 support one of the most basic features of a $29 set-top DVD player!

JRiver developers...
