How do I control two devices with one remote?
« on: May 26, 2004, 05:55:24 am »

Has anyone found a way to control two entirely separate devices such as a computer and a DirecTV satellite receiver box with only ONE remote control ?

Back in the days before I had any boxes, all the TV channels were controlled by the ATI TV tuner so it was easy to use the ATI Remote Wonder to control my TV channels & sound.

But, today most people use a box of some kind (if they want any real channels or quality signal - not to be confused with so-called quality TV of which there is very little).

Equipment I am using...

For the computer & MC... ATI A-I-W with the new Remote Wonder II (RF only).

For DirecTV satellite receiver... RCA Wide Range Remote (has both IR & RF output at same time).

So... it comes down to having two separate systems...

One for volume \ mute control, and Media Center playback.

One for the TV box to change channels.

The two remotes seem to have different frequencies as one does not seem to be able to control the others devices.

Can the ATI Remote Wonder II be used to change the channels on the satellite box ?
--- OR ---
Can the RCA remote be used to control MC ?

How can this be done ?

We need an all-in-one remote with both IR & RF transmitters built-in.

I've been playing with a Niveus RF/IR universal remote control.

That controls my TV via IR and my PC via RF

X10 have a similar device on their Web site

I'm still getting the PC stuff sorted out, I'm using Girder , but the Remote does come with a simple control app.

I have the DirecTV satellite receiver remote... RCA Wide Range Remote (has both IR & RF output at same time).  The problem is that it uses a different frequency then the ATI RF remote so it will not work with the ATI receiver.

What we really need is a universal standard for remote frequencies similar to garage door openers where most of them use the same frequency but select from thousands of codes so the next door neighbor's opener does not work on your door.  That way a remote would work on any device.
