Share your MC 11 tile templates here...
« on: June 15, 2004, 09:54:31 pm »

I'm not an html coder but I played around with the default tile in MC 11 and came up with something different, not better, just different.  I'm sure others can do a lot more.  If you come up with something cool, share it!

This is a tile that shows the results of the audio analysis.

Change the name of the index file in

program files\j river\media center\data\tile templates\default

and save the html below as a file named index.htm

Here it is:

<html>

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-us">
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<title>New Page 1</title>
</head>

<body bgcolor="#C0C0C0" topmargin="0" leftmargin="0" style="background-color: #C0C0C0">

<table border="0" width="754" cellspacing="5" height="156" bgcolor="#C0C0C0">
  <tr>
    <td width="182" height="148">
      <font color="#000000">
      <img border="0" src="[Image File]" width="158" height="157" align="center"></font></td>
    <td width="234" height="148">
      <p style="background-color: #C0C0C0"><font color="#000000"><font size="4">>[Artist]:

Hi JRiver - Tiles are awesome!!

I assume it's already on your list of things to do, but just in case...

How about a way to change between different tile templates, maybe by view scheme so it wouldn't be global, but applied to each view.

Like I said, I'm sure you're way ahead of me.....

There's nothing new.

However, we think this area has a lot of potential for delivering new and interesting ways to look at your files.

We're hoping users will run with it a little, and tell us what still needs to be done.

Thanks.

After I made a template, I lost it when I installed the next version.

I know I should back it up, that's not a huge deal.

But as far as installing goes, is this still happening?  From what I could tell the only template that is recognized is called DEFAULT.

Is there going to be a way to manage multiple different tile templates?

The real power of this tool is not having a single tile view for all situations, it is being able to have a totally different view for each view scheme,

Now i've got my brain thinking a bit and may start rambling on.

But here goes...

If you had different tile templates to choose from, wouldn't that really become your view scheme?  What I mean is all the view scheme would do is control the sort order of the tiles and limit what files are part of the list.  Everything else is controlled by the tile.

So the point is that the tiles need to have almost as much flexibility as the view schemes do in order to be useful.

I'm sure you J River folks have discussed this but from a usability point of view the tiles add a layer of complexity that not everyone will appreciate.  Now MC has so many different ways to get at the data that it can be overwhelming (of course that's why some of us love it so much).

Just to list what I am talking about:

Standard Tree View - Familiar but cumbersome
Media Modes - acts as a global filter
View Schemes - Powerful but complex
Panes - intuitive
Search - powerful
Smartlist - really a saved search
Playlist - saved list of related files
Detail view - spreadsheet style list
Thumbnails - easy to navigate for certain file types
Tile - excellent snapshot of data, needs more work

I'm sure there are some things that I am missing but I don't have MC on this machine.

Not exactly sure what my point here is, except that it is all very overwhelming to a new user (and sometimes to not so new users :D) that I wonder if there is a clearer way to get at all of this power.  Some sort of tutorial or similar.

Is there a way that you could inlcude a bunch of 'sample' views, similar to the sample smartlists that are included?  Maybe they could be added as a MC component when a user wanted to learn more....

I don't know, just trying to brainstorm.....

Could track infos be ported to tiles? I would love to use a MultiInfo like tile tempelate.

I feel track info and tile view are things that could easily be merged into one.

Also probably we need some kind of tile view manager to manage different tile view and also to easily adapt without plungin into html code.

I also feel it should be integrated with view schemes. There should be default tile views for different media types, but it should also be easy to customize.

So, obviously we users haven't run with this very much yet.

It seems like being able to manage multiple tile templates will be a key to making this more user friendly (along with not overwriting with each install).

Does J River have any thoughts on this?  Are these suggestions in the realm of possibility?

Thanks.
