MediaJukebox8.04
« on: July 31, 2004, 02:00:14 am »

If I click on ANY MJ8 file browser icon after launching MJ8. I get an invalid page fault & MJ8 crashes.

If I launch MJ8 by browsing with Explorer & clicking on a .wav or .mp3 file to play it, MJ8 launches ok, plays the file OK, but still crashes with an invalid page fault if I try to use MJ8’s file browser functions.

MJ8 also just locks up if I try to import files or do most anything other than just play files.
I then have to give it the old 3-fingered salute (Ctrl+Alt+Del) & shut MJ8 down from Task Manager to recover from the lockup.

This was happening on the previous Revision of MJ8 which I paid for about 1.5 years ago, so I downloaded the latest rev, 8.04, but I still have the same issues.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's the screendump of the error:

You may have other problems with the PC, but try these:

Update Windows.  IE/Tools/windows update.

Update drivers.  Sound card and video card especially.

Uninstall any third party plug-ins you use with MJ.

"You may have other problems with the PC, but try these:"
Nope, no other problems I’m aware of. Just your SW at the moment.

"Update Windows.  IE/Tools/windows update."
Already fully updated as of 7/30/04.

"Update drivers.  Sound card and video card especially."
Done. Updated as of 7/31/04.

"Uninstall any third party plug-ins you use with MJ."
Done; uninstalled: WMA, OGG, MPC, APE, etc.
The only third-party plugins not signed by JRiver
I have installed with MJ8 are listed under the input (encoders) plugins tab as
CDA, MP3, & WAV.

OK, Jim.
Still no dice, same issues. What now?
I tried turning off all video hardware acceleration, no dice.
I guess I’ll try turning more things off & see if MJ behaves itself at some point.

“Using Windows XP Would Not Hurt Also” --KingSparta
Actually, using WindowsXP would hurt quite a lot.
Just see all the reported XP issues in any BBS/forum.

Windows XP would simply open up a whole new can of worms & issues.
I would prefer to try & fix what I’ve already got & am familiar with.

The devil you know is better then the devil you don’t!

I’m trying to avoid buying a new PC with Wxp.
But, being a realist, I do know it’s going to be unavoidable eventually.
I’ve upgraded this old box about as much as I can.

I shut down MemoKit, a memory-management program for W98se users, & finally got a location where the page fault happened.

Looks like MJ8 isn’t playing nice with my system kernel!

After updating the Yamaha DS-XG audio card driver to 5.12.01, I lost several functionality tabs like SPDIF, DOS-Box, & Sensaura 3D audio control. I also gained a huge, annoying, POP from my audio system at each shutdown with this new driver. Therefore, I reinstalled the old 4.07.1040 driver; no more POP, & all lost tabs are restored. The new driver had no effect on the behaviour of MJ8.04 which still wont run properly, as described previously, when launched from the desktop icon. I guess I'll have to resort to launching it by double-clicking a .MP3 or .WAV file. Then it appears to run OK. Weird. :-\
