Mobile phone support?
« on: July 28, 2004, 09:01:34 am »

Maybe J River can jump on the bandwagon with version 11? A new era is coming over the horizon. See the Wall Street Journal, see my mobile blog ("mob" for short) in the link below, and then snoop around www.textamerica.com.

I want to catalogue my camera phone images as much as I want to catalogue my "regular" digital images.

And I want it to be easy. I see ten ways to Sunday for J River to take advantage of this new paradigm, and for Media Center users to benefit tremendously.

Thanks.  We're aware of the opportunities and would like to pursue them.  It will take time.  We need better cooperation and perhaps better standards for the PC to phone communication.  I expect phones to be mounted as drives using bluetooth soon.

Our pending deals, not yet announced, should make this easier.

Email works fine now as a "standard." And the point of mobbing (and subsequently being able to remotely off-load your pictures to your catalogue for posterity) is that you don't need to be connected to a desktop or a laptop. My phone appears as a removable drive now, via USB, just fine. But I have to be at HOME to transfer the pictures.

A lot of phones (including mine) now also have SD/MMC card slots. I keep a 512 MB one in my phone at all times. Plenty of space to save pictures. But I'd prefer to pack it with Oggs or MP3s and just zap the images off to my catalog, just like I zap them off to TextAmerica.

And this is just one of the many potential hooks MC could exploit. To me it seems the key is the two strengths of the convergent device: wireless and portability. I hear ya on the portability front, but that seems to be a done deal (removable drive, SD/MMC cards), but the wireless part is what's really cool. And improves QOL.

wireless and portability

Sounds like the definition of "mobile" to me.  Thanks for the textamerica link.

Skidoo,
What phone are you using?

I've got a Nokia 6310i with Bluetooth.  It's about a year and a half old.  The PC link software that was available for it was a disappointment.  Even after upgrading firmware on the phone (a fun process) it never worked right.

We could certainly upload/download images and music if we had a phone mounted as a drive.

Around six months ago, we set up a web site here that people could use to upload pictures from phones, but there didn't seem to be much interest.
It still works if anyone wants to try it.

I'm using a Handspring (now PalmOne) Treo 600. Works great as a (USB) removable drive, that I've had since last September or October.

And if you could post the URL to the upload page you were talking about, that'd be great. I'd like to check it out. But TextAmerica has steamrolled the "mob" hosting market. They're WAAAY out in front.

I can CC my personal account when I send an entry to TA now. But when I get home, I have to detach the jpeg, put it somewhere, import it, re-title it, re-comment it, etc. I'd like to be able to CC James River, or even my personal account, and have Media Center import the files from the messages, getting all the information I provide directly, so I don't have to enter it again.

That way my images are safe, space on my phone is cleared up, all with very little hassle. Mobile blogging is huge, and it's coming like a tidal wave. Which I'm sure you guys are aware of. But this forum is the house of commons :-). Just wanted to shout it to the floor.

It was just a proof of concept to see how hard it would be to set up a web gallery.

http://www.jriver.com/phlog/

You can e-mail a picture to your account by using this address:

phlog-skidoo@jriver.com

You can even do this from within MC, but it's important to resize to a smaller size before sending (I forgot a few times).  Right click on image or images, choose send to/email or web/email recipient.  Change the subject to something meaningful.
