Media Server - failed to connect?

When i try to connect my HTPC (in the living room) from my office computer i get an error saying:
"Failed to connect to server
Reason unknown
http://169.XXX.XXX.XXX:81/Get library"
(x just put in here by me in stead of real numbers)

I have checked the on-line help and can't see what I'm doing wrong. The first time i tried the funtion it just worked, but not anymore (I've had to reconfigure my HTPC in between)?

Does it have anything to do with the size of the library?

There is of cource network connection which works and it also seems like it finds the server, as it is an other message I get when the server software is not started at all.

I'm using Media Center 10.0.155

Try switching ports. What is your network like? Are you connecting from home to work, or just at home.

Sorry I didnt' mention.

The two computers are in the same house and they are connected through a wired ethernet (10Mb). Everything else in the network connection between them seems to work.

Has tried a couple of other ports, but without any succes. Any suggestion for useable ports? (I'm using port 80 for NetRemote.)

MediaCenter sees the server as it do connect, but for one reason or the other it can not downlowd the library.

Are both versions of Media Center the same?

Yes they are both version 10.0.155.

Ups, I'm using the same license key. Is this the problem, and am I vilolating my licens?

I can of course not hear music at two places at the same time. But the real reason is that the license started on my Office PC and then moved to my HTPC afterwards. Now I would like to save some disk space on the office computer and thus use the HTPC as the mediaserver.

So if this is the reason I guess I have to spend an other 25 $

No, it's not licensing.

On the client side, use a browser to look at the url:
http://x.x.x.x:y/GetLibrary

x.x.x.x is your IP address for your server, and y is the port it listens on.

See if it works (tries to download a file) or gives an error message that might help track it down

I've tried to connect through my browser as you describe but unfortunately without any luck.

I get the "normal error" explorer error "the page can not be displayed" and in the bottom of the description is written "Cannot find server or DNS Error".

Does that help you?

My router is not filtering on IP adresses, only on MAC. I guess I'm reaching the boundaries of my knowledge in this area ;-)

Sounds like you may be filtering. Check your filter logs.

Try opening a DOS/cmd window and typing

telnet x.x.x.x y

You should get an error message.

Hi John,

Thank you for the support.

It helped me to track down the error. I had not disabled the MAC bridge in the network connection (whatever it might be good for). MC was then using the IP adresse from this in stead of form my ethernet adapter adresse.
