File Type Support: Add-ins for CAD types?

I am curious (a) if it is feasible to allow any file type to be
added as supported (maybe a user-entered extension?) and
(b) is it easily feasible to add Thumbnail support from Autodesk
CAD files?

They maintain a thumbnail within their model files, easily
accessed with a small application that can be used instead of
normal Windows "Properties" to inspect the metadata for that
model file. I was hoping MC could import these thumbnails as well.
