How to create a shortcut to open MC to a particular library?
« on: October 25, 2004, 12:34:02 am »

Is there some way to do this?  Someone suggested mjext commands, but I don't know anything about them.

I want a shortcut to open MC to my library, and another to open it to a different users' library.  That way we can each rate songs independently from one another, but not accidentally work on the wrong library, since I will only use my shortcut to open, and so will they.

Thanks for any help.

Specific text examples would be very helpful.

Well, looking at this page:

http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/DevZone/CommandLine.html

...nothing seems relevant, but that is probably a very old, old document.  :o

If you are using Windows XP, why don't you and your friend just have separate user accounts and just use the Fast User Switching feature of Windows?

i like the separate accounts idea better than the shortcuts.

Less chance of clicking on the wrong library.

Fast switching is possible only in XP as far as i know. On older systems you have to log off and log in.

Fast user switching sounds like it'd work, but I still have a question.  How do I tell MC what library to open in a shortcut.  Even if I switched users, the shortcut would still just open MC, probably to whatever library it had open last, which would be the same thing as not having switched users (I could be wrong about this, I've not tried it).

We will almost certainly have seperate user accounts for many reasons, but I still don't know how this would open MC to the proper library.

Anyone?

i would also be very intrested in that option but not for a library. i would like my second view (in MC 11) to default to a specific playlist (not the playlist view in general). i assume that it can be done as well as the library thing, does anybody have a clue how?

thx alot

If you are using MC11, then the library is stored in user's personal data folder, for example,

C:\Documents and Settings\Omni\Application Data\J River\Media Center 11\Library

Whereas yours (if we were sharing this computer) would be stored in...

C:\Documents and Settings\JustinChase\Application Data\J River\Media Center 11\Library

If you are are using MC10, then I don't know.  Sorry.  There's probably no automatic way of switching between libraries.

Don't see why it would not work in v10.

you would have to backup the library and import it into the second users account and then add/prune as necessary.

The command "mjextman.exe /MCC 20013" will pull up MC's Library Manager window.

If you don't want to use Fast User Switching, you may want to consider making a .BAT file that opens MC and then issues the above command.  It's not automatic, but it will present you with the choice of libraries right off the bat.

Because MC10, as far as I know, does not inherently support users.  Everything is stored in the registry under "Local Machine," not "Current User."  (I could be wrong, but this has been the subject of numerous posts--i.e., Why do I need admin privileges?  Why can't I backup my view schemes? etc.--so the last "active" library is restored each time MC10 is started regardless of what user is starting MC10.

To switch between libraries, you manually have to go to the Library and select it.  This is what Justin is trying to avoid I think.

Thanks Omni.  that sounds like it should work fine for us.  Do you know if i can just copy my default library into the other users' place, and he will have an exact copy of mine to start with? Or do I have to create one with my account, and then he will have to link to it from his user, or how to get the 2 libraries created and synched to start with.

once we each have the same library in our respective users' folders, it sounds like we will be fine, as long as we fast switch users before working in MC.

Thanks again for your help.  We leave on our trip in 8 days, and things are starting to get hairy.  I didn't want this to become too big of a nightmare.  I think you've solved that for me, thanks.

I don't know if it's "officially" supported, but yes, definitely, all you need to do it copy one .\library directory to the other.  (You can do this before or after starting MC11 for the first time.  It will just overwrite your "default" library.)

I speak from experience.  A month ago when I reinstalling my OS literally every other day, that's all I did.  I have yet to ever truly import my library from scratch with MC11.  ;)

BTW, though, I would test out this Fast User Switching feature ASAP if I were you.  I myself don't ever use it, and when it was first introduced, I remember reading articles about it causing compatibility problems.  (This was before even SP1, so maybe Microsoft has worked everything out by now.)  If I recall correctly, though, the issues were networking related, so you'll probably be fine, but you test soon anyway in case you need to find another solution.

To switch libraries why not make a .reg file containing the following text (change to suit the path and name of your library) then create a .bat file that executes that reg file and then opens MC.
