Revo 7.1 ASIO & SPDIF
« on: March 29, 2005, 04:12:35 pm »

I am building a HTPC, and using M-Audio revolution 7.1, I am using coax SPDIF to my reciever.  From what I have read ASIO is the best way to go in this circumstance.  However, it seems the Revolution does not support ASIO through the SPDIF.  Specifying digital out in the revo control panel (which seems to disable system volume and the internal mixer setting, which if I understand correctly is desirable) and using directsound in Media Center works.  So, to make a long story short, am I losing quality by using directsound through SPDIF, instead of ASIO through SPDIF?

So, if anyone could explain how this works to me, or point me to some place that does explain it well, I would appreciate it very much.
Thanks

I have not been able to find much information on this anywhere.  So, I would like to make sure I am doing this right in the the latest version of Media Center 11

To get ASIO out in MC11, I have to have a soundcard that supports ASIO, Then in MC11 I set the output to ASIO.  Is there anything I missed in MC11? I tried different channels, but that did not help.

If that is all takes in MC11, I guess it is back to my orginal question, Is there quality difference between ASIO and Directsound in MC11 using SPDIF out?

Thanks to anyone who might help clear this up for me.

I haven't tried comparing the output options myself so I can't comment on your question.

I'm not sure if this is really true or not, but here's what's been discussed here before (see http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=26238.0):

I thought Direct Sound still sends the audio through MC's internal DSP engine as well as Microslop's kmixer - i.e. no way to get bit-perfect under those conditions.  If you can't get a DTS file (embedded in a .wav) to play back on a DTS-enabled receiver then you don't have bit perfect.  My Anthem locks onto DTS with my setup - I know I'm getting bit perfect.  Here's a link to download some DTS files for testing: http://www.sr.se/multikanal/english/e_index.stm

I did try this test with my UPnP media player and it passed the test.

Thanks for the link and info, I will try the DTS file and see what happens.

Thanks for that link, that was my next step trying those Asioforall drivers.  I searched on the forums but never found that thread.  I guess I did not look for the right thing.  Thanks again, I hope that works.
