Can't get multi zone working on the SBLive!
« on: December 29, 2004, 11:13:33 pm »

I cannot get multi zone to work on my sound blaster live no matter what settings I try.

for every setting it always still plays out of the front left/right.

I am using the KX drivers and tried mapping the zones through wave out, direct sound and ASIO but all to no avail.

Is there another setting that needs to be changed?  Perhaps in the KX drivers?  The Output setting in the zone manager was the only thing I was changing.

Could anyone walk me through the steps to setting it up?

Thank you.

I'm not sure what version of the card you have.  I have the "Value" version and could not get multizone to work until I unchecked the "swap front and rear" option on the main config page.  It is the first one in the row underneath the sliders.

Anybody calling my name?  ;) You need to go into the kX DSP (right click on the icon in the tray and choose router). Right click on the Surrounder (upper right part of the screen, before timbre) and choose Tweak. Then set the speaker mode to 5.1 (providing this is a Live! 5.1 card) and surround to off. Also tick "Use subwoofer output". That should have you up and running.

Hmm, I just tried that but in my preliminary testing it does not seem to work Mastiff. :(  I might have missed something though, I guess I will find out in the new year when I check properly!

cncb, where is this swap front/rear option?  I do have a value card, but I am using it with the KX drivers not the standard creative drivers.  I can't find the option anywhere :(

Double-click the kX icon on the task-bar.  For me it is on the initial page that comes up.  It is right below the first set of volume sliders.  It has an icon with 2 speakers and 2 arrows.

ah! found it cncb!  Thanks!

I can't test it yet thought as the computer is in the other room, connected through the home theatre amp (for testing) and some family members are watching a DVD at the moment.  But I did find it and toggle it off.

*edit*:  Tested and it works now, thanks for the help guys!

You're welcome.  Something I found interesting about this card.  The yellow digital out connector actually carries the front and rear digital stereo signals.  So, you can connect a 1/8" to 2-RCA audio cable and have 2 digital coax signals to match the analog.

Man, I didn't know that! Interesting! That has to be possible to use in my system in one way or another... Is that with the kX Drivers or the original drivers?

I'm using the kX drivers but I think the 2 digital outputs for front and rear are still available with the original drivers.  I don't know if you can route two different stereo signals to the front and rear outputs with the original drivers, though (I never tried it).

No problem.  The only thing missing on this card is a digital input (I'm forced to use the analog input for sync).

Really? I've got that on my SBLive! cards, the only thing is that it is inside the pc case (SPDIF in for CD ROM player wors just as well as any jack - just make an adapter cable yourself).

Yeah, I meant external - but that's a good idea.  The problem is that my "main" soundcard only has optical out so by the time I buy a converter and make an adapter cable I probably could have just bought a new card with digital in...

I'd suggest you get one with coax out, since that's a lot easier to send on to other sound cards. You just solder a splitter, with a bunch of cables, and you're ready to go. I've got one with only optical too, it's called Gainward Hollywood @ Home, and of course I only use that for movies...  ;D It's the card used for my HT.

one more quick question, does anyone know if the Sound Blaster Live 24-bit works well for multizone?

I can get them easily and cheaply at my local computer store.  Also, since they are a 7.1 sound card can you get 4 zones out of it?

Thanks
