Monkey's Audio, FLAC support, & UTOPIA
« on: January 27, 2005, 10:07:09 pm »

I know that all over the web the forums are raging with people fighting to get lossless support for their respective DAP's. [Digital Audio Player]

I have been a MAC [Monkey's Audio Codec] user for years and I love it.

Media Center is such a powerful tool as MAC is, it' s just unfortunate that MAC is not supported on any DAP. I know I know...you've heard it all before.

As hard drives get smaller and batteries more powerful etc. audiophooles around the globe are searching for that combo that clicks. If MAC isn't getting support, MC is losing ground (and money). There is a plethora of FLAC and APE users that are trying to sync up there lossless collections to DAP's.

All DAP lossless arguments aside (battery life etc.), soon, portable lossless playback will be second nature. I for one, have a lot of apes, a lot, yes I said a lot (like everyone else), and I am not really excited about the idea of converting apes to FLAC everytime I want throw some tunes on my DAP at a 2.5x rate. Just store in FLAC.....but MC doesn't support FLAC fully.

I guess that's the breaks, but it shouldn't be.

Yes, the world's smallest violin....but my point is, you guys have something really really REALLY good here, but it could be EXCEPTIONAL, in more ways than one.

You look into to all the different players and recorders and there is a maze of features and codecs you have to navigate until you find the one. The Nueros II will fit my needs (i think), and I fear when FLAC support arrives for it I will end up leaving MC behind for something else...hopefully half as good.

I am not demanding MAC plugins for DAP's or FLAC support, but heck, I'd love it, i think both are great ideas that could bring an even bigger user base to MC...You guys could really put MC on top of the mountain.

Please consider this as development continues.

Well put.

Monkey’s Audio is a great format and I am happy with it. Currently I have no reason to use any other lossless format.

But,

FLAC has had a growing popularity for some time now. Besides the hardware player support issue there are a lot of people using extensive FLAC collections with Foobar 2000. It is a good tool, but nowhere near to MC. It has much weaker database, it is complicated to use and the GUI is quite unfriendly. In my opinion a fully implemented FLAC support could directly increase the MC user base.

In the case of MC the absence of the full FLAC support is obviously not a matter of programming skills or software limitations. I think it is more a matter of priorities.

P.S. What about the Nero MP4 AAC format? It seems to be increasingly popular too.

Edited a bit to better express myself.

I agree that FLAC should be supported. I don't have more FLACs because MC doesn't support them.

Sadly, the answer to that question was posted in this thread:
