Cuttoff Songs
« on: October 23, 2002, 08:31:02 am »

Has anyone come up with a way to determine if a file is complete or not?

I would think that this would be a difficult task but it would be great to be able to feed a batch process a list of song titles to test for completeness.

If this is not possible due to the sure amount of variations possible in songs then could one of the visualizations be something similar to the song editor?

What do you think?

The only way to automate the process is to find length of current song and compare it to some reference value (such as in YADB or CDDB). I don't think track length is stored in either DB, though.

So, it becomes a manual process. It is possible to cut up a MP3 into pieces and they will all play. If, however, you interrupt the encoding process then file will be corrupt.

Alsp Mp3\Utility And Helium Also Have A Mpeg Sync Checker. They basicly check to see if there is any errrors in the mp3 and with errors the file may be cut off.

if you download files, if the file does not have id3v1 tags thjis could indicate that the file has been cut off since the id3v1 tags are at the last 128 bytes of the mp3.

since there are many versions of some songs it may be hard to tell if the length is correct. a radio edit is not the same length as a live edit etc...

yes but they may have sync errors or the id3v1 tag will be missing.

No at all. When I encode w/ LAME, I use ID3v2 Only option, which are placed at the beginning of the file. If one of my files is truncated, it may have an error, and it may not. So ID3v1 tags (present or missing) are not a good test for "completeness".

no but it may, there is no guarentee but it helps find errors and posable corrupt or short files.

as i said another indication is that the id3v1 tag is missing, this is not a guarantee but it may help point to a short file.

Helium is better at finding errors than MP3\Utility is, but both will find errors the other will not. I use both no matter where it came from e-music, other download, or even ripped from my cd's

>> You did not think i was so stupid
never entered my mind

there is no sure way to find if a file is short, if a file has x-ing headers it is possable also to see if the x-ing length matchs up with the true file length. if not then it is possable that the file has been cut off.

The one i do not love is  MP3 check.I just tested now on a 750 songs folder,i got 170 songs with problem ,80% at more than 90%,up to 100%

Running Mp3 Utilities,in 10 times less time i got 2 songs with problem.
Playing the songs i still have to find one with problem.Even the 100% error.
Not to say they sound great.Kind of 100% DIY recordings encoded at low kp/s.Mp3 check ,by the way gives wrong quality.

I was wrong,Mp3Gain does not give any indication concerning song complete.EncSpot 2 tells you if the last frame of the mp3 is cut short
