Real Player?
« on: October 21, 2002, 08:56:18 am »

Is it necessary to have Real Player, Windows Media Player or any other players installed or can MJB stand alone?  I recall a few years ago when I first started using MJB, I had to download some Real software.  For some reason I have started to have sound problems with pops, skips and other noises.  I have a Sound Blaster ExtigyMedia Jukebox PLUS 8.0.388
Install Path: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: Intel Pentium II 450 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 392 MB, Free - 129 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows 2000  Workstation 5.0  (Build 2195)

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106
ComCtl32.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shell32.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
wnaspi32.dll: Internal ASPI Layer

Thank you for any help and MJB is a great product.

>>Is it necessary to have Real Player, Windows Media Player or any other players installed or can MJB stand alone?

RP & WMP (v7.1 or less, NOT v9!) peacefully coexist with MJ. In fact for some RP streams, it IS necessary to have RP installed (last I checked). Don't know if you can really uninstall WMP, but like I said, u don't need to.

Pops & skips may be caused by your playback mode.
Go to Settings>Options>Playback and change output mode to DirectSound, bitdepth to either source or 16 bit, and click on the settings button and move slider all the way to more responsive.

It doesn't hurt to check if you have the latest of everything: OS service packs, soundcard drivers, latest ASPI (despite MJ using internal version), etc.

Xenno, thank you for your reply.  I did have my playback settings set as you suggested, I had done that due to a suggestion you had posted a few months back.  I have also checked  for updates on everything and I still have the sound problem.  I am going to uninstall RP since I don't need it.  When I first open MJB and select anything to play, the sound is very bad, I can stop the track and hit play again and the sound quality is better but still has problems.  This has just been a problem since I started using version 8 beta in the early stages.  Thank you

From your sys info looks like your behind on SP's, so download Win2000 SP3 and install (I'm not saying this is the solution, but it sure couldn't hurt).

U didn't mention anything about soundcard drivers....do u have the latest?

Xenno

PS: Look for latest DirectX stuff for Win2K. I think latest is v8.1. By the name this is generally a video only update, but it may update ALL Directxxxxx API's.

You cannot play any Real stream if you do not have RealPlayer on your machine.
The same for Windows  format
Concerning Windows MediaPlayer even 6 will do
Concerning Real DO NOT install RealOne.
Get RealPlayer 8.
There is a link on this forum where get it and how to set it.
You can run RealPlayer  throught Media Jukebox. But keep in mind that in fact what you get is RealPlayer in the Media Jukebox interface.
You can also get RealPLayer to behave allmost well with Media Jkebox if you set it according to one of my many posts about it-seach the forum-.

Now if you know you do not need to stream any Real file ,MUCH BETTER  not to  have it on your computer.

Don't make sens to get syphilis for the pleasure....

Xenno, I have just recently installed the Creative Sound Blaster and just now re-checked  for driver updates and I have the latest ones.  I also have Direct X V8.1 and just did a music test which was sucessful.  I have as an OS WinXP Home and I get an indication that Win2000 SP3 is not for my system.  I do almost daily update checks on my OS, MJB, Norton, etc. softwares.   The sound problem presist with MP3 files or with audio CD's but does improve each time I stop and restart play.

Zevele, thank you for your information and I have removed all RP software from my computer.

On this computer I started with Win98, upgraded to Win98 SE and now have upgraded to Win XP Home edition.  I have never had Win2000 installed.  The System Info came from the link on MJB which I copied and pasted.   I am including the System Info again.
Thank You.

Did you upgrade to XP with a 'real' Windows XP?
Or a grey one?

System info still does not make sense (it is incorrect) - if your running XP then it should say:
XP blah blah blah 5.1.

Won't it? (I run W2000, when it's no longer supported :'(, then it's off to Linux land :D)

Xenno, I do not know why MJB System Info indicates what it does , but this is the information I get from  My Computer properties.

System:

Microsoft Windows XP

Home Edition

Version 2002

Service Pack 1

Registered to me with a serial number.

Thank you again for your responses and I will keep trying.

>>Linux,ok but what about all the music side?

There is quite a bit of support for ALL cool formats (Ogg, MP3, MPC, FLAC). Not sure about APE.

Don't think there's any Juke on Linux even remotely close to MJ.

My plan: First we'll rub JimH the wrong way (soften him up)....then the right way (he'll then see the light). Then MJ on Linux will be a reality.

But I'm not switching to Linux real soon.....
Luv W2k, and still has excellent support.

In MJ, go to Help>System Info, copy & post info presented. I know it's XP now, but I'd like to see what MJ says about your machine.

I have 2000 english and 2000 hebrew/english

And i run ME..If you can tell me who has my 2000 discs, next day i run 2000.
I do not want XP for many raisons

By music side i mean all the small programs  you may use and make life so easy
I know from posts that MJ/Linux is on the planning, but when?

But as you say,i do think support to 2000 will last  for long.

My dream is a Mac.
But very expensive
Not that much programs to run
And i am  not even sure you can buy one here-inIsrael-

>>OS: Microsoft Windows 2000  Workstation 5.0  (Build 2195)

It's still erroneously reporting as Win2000.

I would do the following: (I assume u are a registered user?)
1.) Go to Help>Backup license and do so to some known location (a HD directory or floppy)
2.) Uninstall MJ & reboot
3.) Reinstall MJ
4.) Go to Help>Restore License
5.) Reimport all your music files

This is not guaranteed to solve your playback problem, but it may help. At least your sys info should be correct then.

Xenno

Zev,
Thats what most of the Linux programs are (at least right now), small utilites & applets ranging in quality (the good, the bad, and the ugly). I haven't really done much research on it, but there seems to be no shortage of music programs.

PS: If you want a taste of Mac's OS X, look at Linux (and vice versa). They are very, very similiar to each other.

?: What was the original topic again?

After backing up my MJB license, I uninstalled MJB and then did a search for any MJB files and deleted them.  I rebooted and downloaded MJB 8.0.388, I didn't have to restore my license that area was greyed out.  I imported over 3200 MP3 files and so far the sound quality is good from them and from Audio CD's.  I still get what appears to be the same System Info.

Question out of curiosity (which might help) : do installed 'windows' audio codec (such as DirectX filters) have any influence on MJ behavior ?

Way to see which codecs are installed:

Start -> Run -> "dxdiag"

or

Start -> Run -> "msinfo32" |-> Components -> Multimedia -> Audio Codecs (uncomplete)

If so, maybe "left behind" RP's (or other's) codecs might screw things up.

I just ran "dxdiag" and it did indicate in the Direct X Files tab that there was a file mfc40.dll in the windows folder that needed to be deleted.  I did a search for that file and deleted it.  I then re-ran the dxdiag and it indicated everthing was fine under ever tab, I also did the sound and music test and they were OK.   I am not too computer knowledgeable so I don't know if this was what you had in mind.  I still get the pops and other nosies when I start an MP3 file or an audio CD track then I can stop and restart play and the sound improves.  Thank you, Joe K.

Joe,

Have you played with the
Options>Playback>Output>Settings Button>More Skip Resistant/More Responsive slider yet? I assume your still using DirectSound? Change bitdepth to 16 bit.

On my 700 MHz P3, I've got it slid all the way to the right (More Responsive). Try yours all the way to the left (more skip resistant). See what happens.

Xenno, I have tried all the different settings in playback and have it set on direct sound 16 bit.  I have tried the slider in all positions also and still have the noise & pop problem.  Each time the sound quality is improved by starting, stopping and re-starting play but there is always some unwanted noises.  Thank you, Joe K.

Try a google search for creative sound problems and drivers.  There are some known problems.  You might check their support as well.

Contrary to popular opinion on the site I actually found that with my SB Card it was best to set output to Wave Out rather than direct sound.  I got some horrible noises when set to Direct SOund like buzzing when I changed tracks and the like.  Never had any such problems with Wave Out.  Not saying this will help in your case but you may wanna try it...

Jim H., my cousin just left our home here in the hill country of central Texas and said he was going home to the Snowhills of Nebraska.  Is that anywhere near the Sandhills of Nebraska.  Thank you for your suggestions and I had already tried that and did not find a solution.

NoCodeUK, I switch to wave out and still have the same results with pops and nosises.  Thank you, Joe K.

I just tried a google search for

creative driver problems click pop

Here's just one of the pages I found:

http://alive.singnet.com.sg/tech/click.htm

Nebraskans like to joke about their "ski industry".  The poster I like has a headline of "Ski Nebraska".  It has a picture with a completely flat landscape.  Most of the real hills are in the next state west -- Colorado.
