Soundcard->WAV->APE Legit?

I have a few CDs that will not rip with any tool. No, not copy protected, just scratched. They will however play fine.

I have no idea if playing the CD with no equalization/DSP/etc and recording a WAV from the soundcard would be as good quality as a rip?

Ideas? Thanks!

I've done this by sending the digital out of my CD player to the digital in of my soundcard. I've used a variety of tools to record the bitstream. Works fine (although creating the CUE file by hand is a bit tedious).

You might want to use a program called Total recorder, i think its claim to fame is that it gets the stream directly off the sound card.

I think there is a little bit of noise (electronic noise from the audio card electronic components) when the audio is processed through the sound card components and then recorded. If you have a good sound card this noise might be minimal.

Its not as clean as from the CD direct.

Does EAC refuse to rip those scratched CDs as well ?

A bit pricy for that use. I live in China where CDs are about US$1.50 each. Legal? I can buy 'em at WalMart!
I have Audiotools which also records the stream to/from your soundcard.

Yes, it's why I said I couldn't rip them with any tool.

Well , my thoughts are if I have a decent CD and decent soundcard how can the result be bad.

And having just done this, as long as you get the level right, you have a very nice recording. I wish someone would make a decent VU meter app for PCs. I found one, Pinguin Audio Meter, but they want 245 Euros for it!

BTW- I have a SB Audigy which does have the 'WhatUHear' ability.
