Hi all,
I just found
http://www.weedshare.com through the Reverse Engineers website
http://www.thereverseengineers.com. It's kind of a neat idea. You download the 192kb weed DRM enabled WMA files and are able to play them 3 times, then you have to purchase them (usually a $1 each) if you want to play them more. If you want, you can put the "weed enabled" WMA's you've purchased on your website, or even P2P, to promote them, and you get a cut of the proceeds (not sure how the tracks are linked back to who purchased them). I think this is the first "innovative" use I've seen of DRM.
The weed DRM works "mostly" through MC. It acquires the license fine, but fails to play immediately after acquiring it. If you cancel the error that comes up and hit play again, it plays just fine, though I'm not sure if that ate one of my plays...
The best part is that the artist gets a 50% cut of the profits...
The DRM allows you to burn your purchased tracks to CD and play it on up to 3 different computers. I haven't played with it much, so I'm not sure how annoying that little restriction will be...
The only real issue I see with the system is that it's tied into PayPal for funding your WeedShare account, so that will limit some people from being able to purchase tracks, since PayPal isn't available everywhere...
Oh, make sure you have continuous play off when you are checking out tracks, so you don't burn multiple plays.
