This concept was initiated by Mastiff, but as I have something to add and Jim suggested a new thread be started for the topic, here goes....

The latest build of MC now has a bookmarking function for audible books and it was asked if that capapbility might be extended to other media types. My thinking is that my standalne DVD player does this between power cycles; my CD player does not. My iPod bookmarks audio books but not music files. the software DVD player on Mac OSX is capable of resuming playback for most any DVD it's seen.

It doesn't seem unreasonable to follow this as a guideline.

MC 11 does bookmark DVDs and resume where it left off.

Please add bookmarking for other file types, especially MP3 and AAC.

I listen to a lot of lectures, panel talks, etc. from IT Conversations and other sources. These can be as long as 3 or 4 hours and bookmarking would be very convenient.

MC has ever since I started using it (early version 8, I think) had a problem starting playback after resuming from hibernation, no matter what sound cards, OS and so on that is used (and I have tried most of them...). So right now I have a very "dirty" solution to that in my carputer: Girder reads the minutes and seconds on hibernation, mutes everything at resume and then sends the approximately correct amount of ffwd commands. It doesn't always sound good, and it shouldn't be necessary. Especially with audio books, that can be up to one hour per track, this is a big annoyance. With a command for "resume playback" I could just stop all zones at hibernation and then send the command to resume when the system's back. I hope that's understandable...

Snapshot Playlists?

Here's how I would like to see bookmarking expanded.  I have many Audio Book files (about 82 books = 9,055 files).  90% of these are in mp3 format.  The rest are m4b (apple's format with m4a extension just renamed to support file bookmarking).  About 70% of these files are 10 minutes or under.  Bookmarking in mp3's would be great (but not the absolute best in my case since the audio files are shorter); however, I think that snapshots (maybe a special playlist) with bookmarking would be even more effective.  That way if I am listening to one of my books playlist and I decide to listen to something else, I would want the playlist to take a snapshot of the files in the playlist and bookmark the file and position of where I was last listening.  That way, when I reload the playlist, it would be EXACTLY where I left off.  This would be effective for playlists with music files also.  If you have a longer music playlist and want to continue where you left of listening (and not have to skip through the songs manually), you could load the special snapshot playlist and continue EXACTLY where you were last listening.

Hopefully this explains what I'm thinking.

We could add an advanced option:

Start at last location for: No files / Files over 5 minutes / Files over 10 minutes / Always

I'm not sure if anyone would really use it though.

I'd use it too, but I'd make the time options more like:

Never / Files Over 10 Minutes / Files Over 30 Minutes / Always

I have some songs that are over 10 minutes long, and wouldn't want them to resume.

Actually the best for me (I always look at what's best for me... this time it would best for everybody with automation) would be a separate command with a separate windows message and command line switch for "resume play". Then it would be easy to make the distinction between resume and restart playback.

Let's think more globally.
Bookmarking is necessary not only for Audio Books. Currently I have a [Cue] list-field, where I put Timecode with Description on each part of the music. I use it for my video-editing purposes. Also, bookmarks are necessarly needed to be added for files which contain multiple tracks, for DJ Sets, long Mix-tracks, etc.

All of the above can be typed directly to some [Custom Field].

But, it would be lovely to see my [Cue] field Alive. I think additional Field Data Type should be added: "List (playlist)" or "List (cuelist)" with additional window to edit it's values, which will consist from two columns: [Timecode] [Description]. The difference from common "List (semicolon delimited)" Data Type would be that after selecting an item from the list, MC will automatically play the music starting from the timecode contained in the selected line.

A Factory Default [Lyrics Synchronized] field can be added to demonstrate the power of that kind of Field. An example of what data would this field contain:

I will extend the idea of possible functionality of this field. Additional Factory Default Field of this type should be added, into which MC will write automatically a Timecode at which the file was stopped or when a user switched to another track. In case if a file was listened to the end, this Field would contain [00:00:00]
