Media Server error after playing several files
« on: April 24, 2005, 02:38:46 pm »

I am having a problem with the media server application since the upgrade to 7.1a.  This problem occured with version 9.1.319.  I thought maybe it was because it was an older version of the software, and I contemplated upgrading to try and solve the issue, so I downloaded a trial version 10.0.173 to see if it fixed the issue.  It did not.  I am not willing to try a beta version of the product if the release version did not solve the issue.

The problem occurs whenever I play a number of songs.  It plays fine, and I can skip to the next on, FF/REW, etc without a problem.  The issue occurs at the end of a song after playing several songs (the number varies;  it seems to be about 5, but sometimes it's 1, sometimes it's 7, but it's always irritating)  The song stops playing at what appears to be one second shy of the running time.  The TiVo then displays a generic error message, and returns me to "Music and Photos" where the Media Server is once again available.

The log from the Media Server looks like:
...
04/24/05 11:46:12 - TiVo HTTP: ready for another connection
04/24/05 11:46:12 - TiVo streaming M:\Chris Isaak\Always got tonight\05 - Life will go on.mp3
04/24/05 11:49:33 - TiVo HTTP: received a connection

04/24/05 11:53:43 - tcp_write failed error=10054
04/24/05 11:55:55 - TiVo HTTP: received a connection

04/24/05 11:59:05 - TiVo HTTP: ready for another connection
04/24/05 11:59:07 - TiVo HTTP: received a connection
...

I can then select another folder/song/playlist, etc and the same thing will happen again.

I am using an 802.11g wireless nw to connect to a 2.8 GHz XP2 system with 760 M RAM.

Has anyone else ever seen this problem, or have any idea how to correct it?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Is it possible for you to test this with a wired connection.  We've seen some similar problems that I think are related to a bug in wireless networking somewhere.

I will give wired a shot this evening.  Is there any additional logging I can get for you?  I noticed someone had posted another problem with the text from what appeared to be a debug style stack-dump as opposed to the basic info from the Media Server.  Maybe it was a network trace?

I also had this issue when I was using an 802.11b after the upgrade to 7.1.

Try MC11, I fixed several things related specifically to the 7.1a version of the TiVo Software.

I have not been able to recreate the problem when using a wired network.  It does appear to have something to do with the wireless.

I will try v11 and see if the is any better with the wireless.   It is just a matter of time before the dog eats the cat5 draped through the house, so wired is not really an option.

UPDATE:  After I put the 802.11g adapter back, I noticed something.  At the beginning of a song that is about to err, the play bar on the Tivo stays at 0 for some seconds, then pauses that number of seconds prior to the end of the song.  For example, a 5 minute song stayed at 0 for 3 seconds, then stopped at 4:57.  It stayed here for about 30 seconds then timed out.

I presume that there is some mis-match between how long Tivo thinks a song has been playing and how long it actually has been playing.  Your software probably provided the entire song after some delay ( for whatever reason: network, software, etc.), but the Tivo thinks the server should be giving it the other X seconds.  When some timeout period elapses, the Tivo thinks there is a network or server problem and give the generic error I have been seeing.

Of course I could be wrong...

Going to try V11 beta.  Will let you know if it works more consistently.

UPDATE 2:
OK, I tried v11, with the same results.  However, I also tried TiVo Desktop, which has exactly the same problem.  I am going to refer this to TiVo for them to look into since this is obviously an issue with the TiVo itself.  Thanks for your suggestions.
