Moving/Renaming folders trouble
« on: May 17, 2005, 03:16:06 pm »

Trying to use MC for what the subject says... Without luck I might add, just ending up with alot of stray folders and files.

Recently I found an album on my drive called Soundtrack - Reservoir Dogs (it's excellent by the way!). Since I've changed my naming conventions a bit, I thought I'd rename the album to '[OST] Reservoir Dogs' instead. So, here's the scheme:

In my albums folder:
\Soundtrack - Reservoir Dogs\
VA - Soundtrack - Reservoir Dogs - 01 - Song1.mp3 etc...

In MC, I chose to Find and Replace 'Soundtrack - Reservoir Dogs' with '[OST] Reservoir Dogs' in order to rename the folder, change the album tag and rename the files matching the string.

What happened was that MC created a new fold named '[OST] Reservoir Dogs', leaving the old folder with a single folder.jpg in it.

So after a lengthy explanation, how should you do?
This should be the result:
1. RENAME the desired folder (not create another one)
2. Set the album tag
3. Rename the files matched by the search string and keep the rest of the containing files within the folder

As marko said the problem is that MC handles only the files imported in the library. Linked cover art files are actually not part of the MC library.

You can rename a folder with MC tree in "Devices & Drives > My Computer" (right click > Edit... or press F2). Then it will rename just the folder. MC fixes the paths of the imported items. If the cover art links don't contain paths the unimported folder.jpg images will be found as before.

I have imported the cover art images as well. When I move albums I select the album image files too. I have explained my system in this thread: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=22841.msg159422#msg159422.

Actually, the folder.jpg's ARE imported (when I import new music, I right-click the albums folder -> Import via Explorer).

But as you said, it can be done through a 2 step process. I did it with some sample folders/files and it worked out ok. I'm starting to believe I was thinking the wrong way around.

So, for now anyway, I first rename the folder within MC's 'Explorer'. Then I 'Find & replace' the properties so that the folder's album part is synced with the tags and filenames. After that, I check the files so there are no mishaps.

But it's a time-consuming way, about 4-8 minutes per album. If it worked like I thought it would, I could do this in one step and save a couple of minutes :)

Thanks for your input, and if you find any grand solutions, don't hesitate to post them!
