Media Center 11.0.276 Release Candidate
« on: May 24, 2005, 05:50:17 pm »

We're just about ready to release Media Center 11.0.  We appreciate your bug reports.  PRICES are here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23311

PLEASE DO NOT POST HERE WITHOUT READING THE FOLLOWING:
Post only bugs you are certain about here.  Post questions or anything else in a new thread with a subject like "MC11: CD ripping problem"   If you can't find your post here, please look in the main index.   All feature requests should be postponed until MC11.0 is released.  Media Center 11 is available here:  ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter110276.exe   (End of required reading)

11.0.276 (5/24/05)

1. Fixed: When starting Media Center while a running Media Center was in the process of shutting down would not always get a new Media Center started.
2. Changed: Media Center was using DirectX instead of its own audio engine for some compressed WAV formats even though the MC engine could suppport them.
3. NEW: Added support for multi-channel (5.1, 7.1, etc.) WAV and WMA files.
4. Fixed: Playlist views and library browser would not properly update their thumbnails after changing images for a file until leaving and returning to the view.
5. Changed: When making changes to images (set from clipboard, add from file, etc.) MC will block until the tags can be saved. (otherwise background tagging thread and list don't stay in step as expected)
6. Fixed: When dragging-n-dropping files from an explorer window to MC, focus would (occasionally) incorrectly return to the explorer window when the drop was complete.
7. Fixed: The TiVo Server would crash when choosing a second song to play while still playing a first.
8. Fixed: In some circumstances TV's Scan Channels window would appear to hang when Scan button was press (due to failure of the TV driver to recognize certain country code).
9. Fixed: Removable drive handheld devices could be overly slow when dealing with some file types. (QT, mp4, etc.)
10. Fixed: Changed caching so smartlists are not kept forever.
11. Fixed: If all encoders removed from MC, errors could occur when exploring options.
12. Fixed: Playing files from Portables within MC.
13. Fixed: In some cases, MC could deadlock with a "Saving tag changes..." dialog.
14. New: Added some fileinfo (File Properties->File Type Info) for RAW images.
15. Changed: Consolidated the Image File Information handling to JRImage.dll.
16. Changed: The Cover Art directory is no longer deleted unless the user specifies 'Remove library files' when uninstalling.
17. Fixed: Seeking to the very beginning of a song wouldn't always work as expected.

11.0.275 (5/23/05)

1. Fixed: TV time-shifting could sometimes hang if Fast Forwarding was attempted when the player was at the very beginning of the time-shifting buffer.
2. Fixed: CD burning was broken in the last couple of builds.
3. Fixed: Improved hotkey handling for systems that intentionally throw hotkeys in multiple ways.
4. Changed: Added support for a few more multimedia keys like fast forward, rewind, channel up, channel down, etc. (improves MCE remote support)
5. NEW: Added Options > General > Advanced > Media key mode for changing how MC catches hotkeys on systems where the automatic handler doesn't work as expected.
6. Changed: During portable transfers, transfer speed will update during initial transfer.
7. Fixed: Splitter arrows were not implemented correctly for some skins causing the splitter to get stuck minimized or maximized.
8. Changed: Suppressed on-screen error message "Cannot find VCapture:IAMStreamConfig" from TV.
9. Changed: Latest Nomad / Dell handheld plugin installed with each new build.
10. NEW: Audible files can be played with conversion on TiVo and UPnP devices.
11. Fixed: TiVo configuration dialog allowed typing in the encoder name field.
12. Changed: When pressing F5 in a random-style playlist, the selection would not be cleared even though the underlying files had changed.
13. Fixed: The TiVo beacon would occasionally crash.

11.0.274 (5/20/05 4:59pm)

1. Fixed: hh_portable installation problem.

11.0.273 (5/20/05)

1. Changed: Multimedia key handler intelligently disables secondary handler when the primary handler works on the system. (disables chances of repeat)
2. Changed: The above change allows the anti-repeat time to be reduced to a more usable level for quick button taps.
3. Fixed: Portable devices that require custom plugins may not have run the plugin correctly.
4. Fixed: PSP video would not play after transfer.

11.0.272 (5/19/05)

1. Fixed: Library Server crashing because of File Associations.
2. Fixed: Transfer errors could have occured when transferring to a Portable when the WMA plugin was deleted.
3. Fixed: Library Server, TiVo Server or UPnP Server would occasionally hang on exit.
4. NEW: Reworked how builds are stored and packaged to reduce download by about 2.5 MB (without removing anything).
5. Changed: Increased multimedia key anti-repeat time.
6. Fixed: Switching modes wouldn't properly update to the correct display. (by design, standard view, theater view, and mini view can have their own display settings)
7. Changed: Renamed launcher / mjextman to MC11.exe.

When I have the Options > Tree & View > Sorting > Sort by track # for single albums checked and then I goto an ablum with multiple discs it should sort by disc # and then Track #

If I use the Disc # field the album becomes incomplete in the complete album field

Also, To rip you do the following.

Insert Disc   ;D
Click Rip In AW,
This brings up another screen that has Play at the top, ?
Then in teh AW click rip again.... Shouldn't the Rip button be beside the Play in the other screen?

I have installed a few older versions to check if the rip screens were that slow, and they are. I have went as far back as 258, I'll try some older ones l8r

I think I've found a bug-- I have an iPod attached, and it shows up in the bottom left pane, with the "DROP FILES HERE" and "Synchronize" buttons. I've right clicked on this area and gone into "Options", and chose the "Convert When Necessary" under "File Conversion". I've set it to use LAME (and LAME is installed.) I queued up some miscellaneous formats-- 3 M4As (non-encrypted/DRMd), 2 MPC's and 1 MP3. The MPC's and the MP3s transferred fine (and Media Center properly converted the MPC to an MP3 for the iPod)-- but the M4As give me an error. Media Center just says they were unable to be converted.

Shouldn't there be a list (hardcoded, or user defined) showing the native formats of the portable player installed, so Media Center can safely "not convert" those? It's seems kind of a pain to have to turn off conversions just to transfer M4A's to my iPod.

When connected to Library Server I can't choose WMA as the encoding format from Tools -> Options -> Library -> When playing from Library Server; only MP3 and Ogg Vorbis are listed.

When I tried Ogg Vorbis it would sometimes end the song prematurely (as much as a few minutes) and go to the next song as if the song was finished. Also I noticed that you can't seek within the song with Ogg Vorbis, maybe this is normal, I've never used it before.

When I tried encoding as MP3 everything was fine.

When I try to auto sync to my Karma, it tries to convert files that are supported (OGG) even though I say "Convert When Necessary".  Much worse than that, it appears to simply convert same file over and over and never transfer it to the device.  This is a new issue in the last few builds.  If I disconnect the device it says "Device Disconnected" then every few seconds it says transfer of file failed.

Not really ideal...

Thanks!

I also noticed that when in mini-mode the track position indicator is stuck at the beginning of the track and does not move. This also might be related to playing via Library Server with MP3 encoding. When I turn off encoding it works correctly. Note that when in normal mode the position is displayed correctly.

Update for issues discovered in previous build(s):

1. When MC doesn't have the focus, MC volume control is smooth and responsive using the Logitech keyboard's wheel volume control. When MC has focus, the volume jumps in 5% increments (not really audibly noticable though). You can see the difference if you have MC in a windowed state, and you click outside to the desktop and move the volume control on the keyboard - the volume control in MC will be fluid and responsive where when MC has the focus, it isn't - it jumps in 5% increments.

Fixed: 2. When listening to a song and you decide to click on the progress bar to a previous position, it actually continues on from where it was, instead of going to the position on the progress bar. Don't think it's a problem if clicking on a position further on in the song - seems only to happen if selecting a position prior to the current one.

Thanks,
Kwake

Name field gone empty?
« Reply #17 on: May 25, 2005, 08:16:35 am »

What gives?  In .276 it appears to have lost the names of some tracks.  That is, the "name" field in the database for them is blank.  The files still contain a valid name in their ID3 tags (v1 and v2).  Using the Library tools update from tags works.

So what's up here?  How'd it lose the track names?

Ripping:
When starting to rip, the screen changes to the "Rip Screen" (for lack of a better term), This is re drawn line by line and is VERY slow. It freezes the computer for 40 to 60 seconds, During this time the rip status bar doesn't move. Once the screen is fully re drawn the rip bar will fly up to were the rip status should be.

This was not like this about a month ago??
I'm splitting this to a new thread called "imjustagamer: slow CD ripping display".

I've found what I think is a critical bug in this new version's handling of iPods-- I used the iPod updater to restore an iPod (wipe it clean), and then hooked it up to Media Center. Media Center found it "empty", which I was expecting, and then I transferred some MP3s to it. Safely removed the iPod, and went to go play the MP3s I just added.. and.. uhm, they're not on the iPod's list at all? Hmm. So I reconnect the iPod, go back into Media Center, and select my iPod on the devices list. It shows all of the songs I just transferred.

I was stumped for a bit, but then I realized that Media Center had never "initialized" my iPod, or asked to. I remember version 10 always warning me to initialize it before it let me transfer music to it. I right clicked on my iPod and chose "Initialize", and then transferred the MP3s again, and sure enough, they worked fine this time. I think Media Center 11 should be prompting, just like it's done in the past, when your iPod is not "initialized" properly.

As a side note, why does it have to be "initialized" anyhow? What does that process do?

Glad to see item 16:

16. Changed: The Cover Art directory is no longer deleted unless the user specifies 'Remove library files' when uninstalling.

Never understood why the default was to delete the cover art, got me the first time I uninstalled and upgraded. Doesn't really matter now since i just install over the previous version and cover art stays put, but nice to know and it may help other newbies from trashing their cover art a time or two.

ahbrown41,

All devices by default allow mp3 and wma files to be transferred. If devices provide more than that, MC adds a custom entry to a table that will allow other filetypes. This is easily done. To make the Karma work smoothly, please let me know exactly how the Karma is presented in the MC (including capitalization and spelling). Also, please let me know all the file types supported by it and if it has any special locations where playlists need to go (if they are supported) or where files need to go. If you email this information to me today, it will be included in tonight's build. Thanks.

steve @ jriver.com

delusion_,

The supported filetypes for devices are included in an internal table for MC. That is why you can tranasfer m4a to iPod and not to other devices. m4a files are not convertible by MC. In MC 12 we can tweak the conversion options to handle your case, but it is not covered now.

Using the iPod updater from 3/23/05 for version 2.3, MC was able to transfer files to iPod for me with no problem after the update. What version of the updater were you using? Initializing is a way to set a baseline for how the iPod is configured that is known to work with MC. It is not always necessary but may be necessary depending on what other applications you have been running and how they configure iPod.

Not sure if this s a problem with MC or not, but:

Just put a CD in my external DVD writer (firewire) and the action window had no "Rip" option in it. Had to right click on the drive in drives and devices and click "Rip"

Put same CD in my internal cd drive and the rip option was in the action window as it should be.

I can understand on your first response, but that makes no sense-- if MC has an internal table, why doesn't it ignore M4A/etc. (with regards to conversion) while synching up with an iPod? Why is there even a "convert if necessary" option in the device's option dialog, if it's just going to convert everything except MP3? This is a bug that existed in 10, and now is being carried over to 11. I can't have Media Center "auto sync" my iPod because of this bug. Surely it's not a big deal to fix/improve upon?

On the second issue, I'm using the latest firmware updater from Apple's website, which updates my iPod's firmware to version 3.0.2. Right after that, I go into Media Center and transfer some MP3s to it. The MP3s never show up in iPod's list, unless I first right click on my iPod in Media Center and choose "initialize"-- version 10 of MC used to prompt me/warn me that I needed to initialize my iPod before using it in MC. Version 11 appears to not do this any longer, and I think it should.

But video thumbnails are still stored in a different location and this doesn't fix the problem of losing these when upgrading to 11.

matshif,

We think the installation instruction on reboot you are seeing is a remnant from an earlier installation and because it fails it never clears the instruction from the registry. In .277 we have changed this behavior to clear the instruction, pass or fail (if it's a legitimate instruction it should never fail).

Thanks for the feedback,

A retry of an earlier request:

Could you please add 2 options to Tools > Options > Startup in which the defaults for View 2 and 3 are defined.

I know is not a bug, but I think it looks strange to newbies once released.
Isn't logical when 3 views are allowed?
I feels a little bit like a 'design bug' if I may use those words.

Not sure if anyone else is seeing this, but when I put a new CD into rip, the downloaded tags do the following:

"I'/ve Hardly Been"
"Baby C'/Mon"

I remember this happening a number of builds ago.

I was changing tags to manually enter the Auto Artist field. After hitting enter (which means, I'm finished, but MC is still changing the tags in the background), the listing of the album and artist in the columns up above in the view. That is, albums that were listed under (Multiple Artists) should have moved to be listed under the newly modified Auto Artist field, but they did not -- eventually they did, but not as soon as I had hit enter.

I've not noticed this behavior before, although it appears to me that the change in the column listing is not happening until the tag is saved.

UI Bug.

When playing a song, the track position indicator starts moving and leaves the tip of the image in the location it started in. If you touch the slider, it corrects itself until you moves the cursor away from the slider again, then it leaves the tip behind again.

It was around 2pm-2:30pm...it happened with 3 CDs, Common - Be, Stephen Malkmus - Face the Truth and Sleater-Kinney - The Woods

The info is not coming from YADB, any idea where it might be coming from?
