YADB not working

YADB doesn't seem to be working, the connecting window is up for a long time and then I end up with the following:

Action: Failed
Status: Failed to connect to YADB server.

11.0.274

All of my other network facilities seem to be working fine and when I go to YADB.com it looks normal so I don't think it is my connection and I don't think the DB is actually down.

I'm on 11.0.280 and I still can't get YADB to work...

If I browse to the YADB.com it still looks to be working properly, but when I insert a new CD I still get the failed to connect error. ?

Updated to 11.0.283 and still no luck.  I would initially assume that it was my network, (SBC DSL) but I have never had issues with YADB and I've ripped thousands of songs.  My network connection seems fine for everything else too.

Please let me know what I can do to test other options...

It's not a firewall problem. YADB has been very hit and miss the last few days. I'm in the process of ripping my 600+ CD collection to FLAC with MC 11 (latest build right now) and there have been many times yesterday and today when the application could simply not connect to YADB. Sometimes I could get a connection by repeatedly retrying, and sometimes it just wasn't there.

I've only been using MC for a week now, and the reliability of YADB seems to leave a LOT to be desired. I realize there's a license fee issue with CDDB support, but in my opinion YADB is one of Media Center's biggest weaknesses.

I thought that might be an issue originally, but I haven't changed firewall settings from version to version and what used to work doesn't anymore so I don't think I should now have to go back and make changes...

Is there a port that needs to be open for YADB now or something?

YADB is generally reliable. If Jim says they had problems earlier then you might want to chill a bit and try again.

There might also be some growing pains that will require them to add/rebalance servers.

I've had problem *uploading* to YADB but I found the easiest way to prevent that is to disable my firewall temporarily.

It isn't a firewall issue, I tried turning it off and still couldn't connect to YADB.  Winamp and my other apps have no problems getting cd information.  ?

As stated before I can get to YADB.com which in the past wasn't possible when the server was down.

I'm not sure what to say...

A few times.

For now I've started using Winamp to rip my CDs instead, are there any drawbacks that you can think of for using winamp vs. mediacenter for FLAC ripping?

Hmmm, I wonder if it's timing out on you. Looks like there might be a outgoing bandwidth problem on yadb. I'm doing some testing now.

Still no luck connecting from my end.  I'm going to try from work tomorrow as a test to rule out my home firewall.  I'll keep you posted.

I figured out what the problem was, it was on my end and not yours.  I'm terribly sorry for any inconvenience that I've caused.

I was recently in China on business and I had to enable a proxy in internet explorer, I didn't think that this should in any way effect Media Center but apparently it did.  I hadn't disabled it because I use firefox for all of my web browsing and I hadn't set the proxy for firefox.  I'm not a network expert so most of this isn't completely clear to me as to why it was an issue with MC11 when everything else that I used for connecting to the internet was working well.

I appreciate your thorough help with this, and again I'm terribly sorry.

It's ok because it coincidently found another problem.

The internet settings in IE are system defaults, they are the same as using internet settings in the control panel.

Some applications like firefox also have their own proxy settings that override the machine default settings. MC uses the machine defaults so that explains what you were seeing.
