Stuttering sound
« on: June 16, 2005, 05:01:15 pm »

MC makes a loud, constant stuttering sound when it plays certain lower bitrate MP3 files like 56k CBR, 48k CBR, 92k CBR. The sound doesn't stop when the track is stopped, it only stops when MC is exited. The stuttering sound does not happen when playing back bitrates like 128k. It doesn't happen with every low bitrate file, it's about 50/50 with mine. I haven't found the pattern yet.

I tried 32Kb MP3's today and had no problem.

Try updating your sound card driver.

Try switching playback options.

With 295 the stuttering is gone using Wave Out playback. The problem still happens when I switch between certain files when Direct Sound output is enabled. I haven't changed my settings in some time so I don't think the problem existed before. Also, the same files work fine in another MP3 player using DirectSound 1, 2 and Wave output.

The problem is solved for me. If you are interested in trying to track down the possible issue with Direct Sound playback, use a list of varied low bitrate files and switch between them.  It doesn't happen with every low bitrate MP3. 32k usually works, 56k, 48k, 92k, non-power of 2 bitrates with joint stereo seem more likely to stutter.

Thanks, bg
