I've seen some mention that the newer LAME encoder no longer requires the "--alt" in the command line, but I can't seem to find any definitive answer on this. Most people seem to be continuing to use the "alt." Is "--preset standard" the same as "--alt-preset standard," and if so, is this what MC11 simply calls "High" for it's "Target Quality?"

--preset standard is the same as --alt preset standard

As gpvillamil said they are the same. The switches are combined in the current LAME encoders (v. 3.95.1 -> ). MC11 has the latest version, v. 3.96.1.

These three strings trigger exactly the same encoding settings:
--alt-preset standard = --preset standard = -V 2

MC11 always displays the actual command line used with the selected option in the Command Line dialog box:
