Slowness in tagging after keeping MC open for long time
« on: August 03, 2005, 08:10:15 am »

This happened during the beta and I noticed it's still happening with 310. I have my MP3 files on a network drive and was in the process of some massive tagging. Since I couldn't finish in one night, I left MC open and continued the next night. Suddenly those nice quick tag changes took about 10-15 seconds per change. Closing MC and reopening didn't solve the problem. I ended up having to reboot to get back the quickness of the tagging.

Seems like if you leave MC open for a long period of time, something slows it down. So I guess my workaround for the time being (hopefully) is to close MC whenever I'm done with it.

That would suggest that something is broken in the networking layer.  Network card driver or OS.

lalittle had a similar problem in this thread:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=29054.0

Let's use this one to try to sort it out.

What network card do you both use?

Wireless?  If so, what router?

While the issues may indeed be related, I'm not entirely sure that this sounds like the same issue as the one I'm having.  My problem (referred to above) is not related to tagging, it is not effected by how long MC11 is open, and it does not "go away" if I reboot -- it's always there.  I experience slowness simply "looking" at mp3s over the network -- i.e. when I browse folders containing mp3s, I get a LONG pause before the mp3s in that folder are displayed.  During this time, the network connection (100mbps) shows a consistant 6%.  If I copy the SAME folder from within MC11 and paste it to a local drive, it uses about 80% of the network connection.  In other words, copying and pasting an entire folder in MC11 takes less time than simply "looking at" the same folder.

This is on shared, mapped drives between machines using WinXP Pro.

The question was asked in the other thread whether I was in a view that uses thumbnails.  The answer is no -- this is browsing mp3s using the basic, main view.  As long as MC11 is kept open, I do not get the long pauses when browsing folders that have ALREADY been opened during this session, but once I close MC11 and return. the pauses return on the same folders.

If the issues being discussed here are truly related and if this is the thread we're going to use to discuss this, it would help if the title of this thread was changed to reflect the fact that this is about a "network" problem, and not just a "tagging" problem (my problem has nothing to do with tagging, so the title is misleading in my case.)  At the moment, the title does not mention "networks," so people searching for information on the issue I'm seeing will definitely not be drawn to this thread.

Thanks for further assistance with this,

Larry

I'm using wired connections (not wireless), with Intel network cards and a 3Com switch.  The network speeds seem totally normal with other processes -- it's just browsing folders containing mp3s in MC11 that has an issue.  I don't think this is a hardware issue.  It appears to be specific to MC11, and it's important to note that MC10 does not exhibit this issue.

When one "looks at" files with MC11, exactly what does it "do" that would take a while?

Press Ctrl+F and paste this into the search: ~d=e

MC will show its temporally Explorer database. That database works as a buffer for the file data. I think that explains why unimported, but previously viewed files display quickly. The Explorer database is cleared on MC exit/restart.

It does not explain why exploring the files on the network drive is so slow. MC reads all physical file tags and analyses the file formats. That takes some time. Could you compare viewing an identical folder of files on a local HD and on a network drive?

I'll have to report tonight what kind of network card I have in the machine - it's wired too, not wireless.

Larry, when you browse the MP3 files, I don't think I've seen how many MP3 files you eventually see. I know in Windows Explorer, outside of MC11, it can take awhile to view the MP3 files if there are a large number of them.

Each folder contains a single album of songs -- i.e. perhaps 9 to 12 songs on average.

It's important to note that the amount of time it takes MC11 to display these songs is MORE than the amount of time it takes to copy the entire folder of songs from the network drive to a local drive from WITHIN MC11.  Whatever MC11 needs to do, I don't see why it would need to take longer than copying ALL of the data over.  It also seems important to note that MC10 does not have this problem.

It's MUCH faster on the local drive.

Turns out I'm using the network integrated in the motherboard: SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
