Assorted/Album Artist/Various Artists Issue
« on: July 10, 2005, 02:18:44 pm »

I store multiple artist albums in MC using the Album Artist tag: Various Artists. The way that it appears in the MC library is perfect - multi-artist albums are aggregated under "Various Artists."

The folders on my computer, however, are a different story.

Even though I've selected "Album Artist" tag, and "Use "Assorted" for [Artists] on multi-artist Albums," some CDs still won't roll up into the "Various Artists" folder in "My Music" - rather, each artist appears separately. This only happens on some albums, and if I go back to check the tags - everything seems consistent with what I think is supposed to be done (and what has worked for most multi-artist albums).  Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

(I've seen others post the same issue - but haven't seen a fix/resolution.)

are the albums that are failing multi-disc albums?

If yes, what naming scheme are you using for them, and are you using the [disc #] field?

-marko.

no. not multi disc, just multi-artist.

Could this be a bug in the later beta versions of MC 11? Is it possible that multiple artist albums just aren't getting filed correctly (most of the problem CDs are CDs that I've ripped recently)?

After digging around a bit more, one thing that I've noticed is that "Album Type" field in the "Calculated" section of "Tag Info" has the culprit multiple artist CDs as "Single Artist (incomplete)" - but I think it should say "Multiple Artists (complete)." Is there a way that I can manually change that "Album Type" field?

...The only thing I don't quite follow in your first post, is that you say you have ticked "use assorted for multi-artist albums"? I leave mine unchecked as I'm quite happy for it to use (multiple artists). My understanding was that you wanted it use a \Various Artists\ folder to hold all your multi-artist albums? In which case, you should have that unchecked...

If you rename files from properties and want to hold all the multi-artist albums in one folder (actually the folder is called 'Assorted'), you have to check this option. You don't have to change the album name or something like that. Another question is why to change the Album Artist tag to 'Various Artists'. I don't see any reason for this.

So I don't understand your case scenario in this context. The answer lies in your first thought: same folder, exactly the same album name, sequentially numbered tracks.

Concerning your scenario: You could keep the album names in your folder ('Assorted') if you would use 'fill track numbers from list order' after deleting the unwanted tracks. No further steps needed.

Thanks. This thread helped me to realize where I was going wrong.

In Tools>Options>File Locations, the Directory Rule should have been:

[Album Artist (auto)]\[Album]

and the filename Rule should be:

[Album Artist (auto)]-[Album]-[Track#]-[Name]
