Artist info problem
« on: October 24, 2005, 10:35:47 pm »

I'm in the process of ripping my entire CD collection and after getting 850 (of 2500) done, Media Center just lost all artist info for 329 albums!!!!!!!!!!

Is there something wrong with Media Center when it gets higher in the quantity of the collection?  It had been working flawlessly up to this point.

FYI, I was able to figure out how to get the Artist info back into the Library without having to edit each one.

I just highlighted the entire "Unassigned" group, right clicked on the Tag Info panel to bring up "Library Tools" and then I chose "Update Library (from tags)".  Within a minute or two all 3000+ tags were updated with the artists' name(s) once again.

But I'd still like to know why MC did this.

Anyone know??

Please copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.

What you describe is what you'd see if you had tracks highlighted while you were tagging and entered a blank artist name by mistake.

Surely if that had been the case, the "update library from tags" would not have worked? The fact that it did tells us that ronshock is saving his tags to the files, so entering a blank artist name would have wiped the info from the file tags too.

My first thought upon reading this was that something in ronshock's workflow (or an obscure mc bug) had caused the artist.jmd file to become corrupted. It's been a while, but I do remember one or two people having a similar problem, though not persistantly, during v11's beta testing stages.

I agree with JimH's assessment.
What you could have done is press ctrl+z right after it happened.   If it was a mistake you made inadvertently, that would have been an UNDO and put things back the way they were.

But he didn't do that.
So, in that scenario, how do you explain the the artist tag still being present in the files' ID tags?

I guess we really need some more details from ron before any further progress can be made here.

Need things like:
System info
filetype being ripped to
typical workflow being used
continuous ripping mode used or not?
what occurred immediately prior to all the artist info being 'lost'

It's a good idea to back up your library frequently when you're doing a lot of ripping and tagging to minimize mishaps. I always do a backup every 5-10 albums just in case, that way there's not so much to recover, (although ever since I started this routine I haven't lost a single file!). FYI: My library contains almost 50K files.
