how to find own IP address for libr server
« on: January 05, 2006, 05:45:23 pm »

I guess its quite ok to have a real good laugh about this question :-)

I am toying with establishing a library server connection between my home and work pc, and can see in the help file, that I should enter the ip address of the server in the client. However, I havent got a clue about my pc's ip address...

Could give me a clue how to find this?

Actually The Easy Way Would Be If You Read Your Post You Will See Your IP Address To The Lower Right.

Or

http://www.whatismyip.com/

Depending On Your IT Department Your Work Computer Could Be Restricted (Like Mine) They Got The Dang Thing Locked Down Tight. I could By Pass It With Windows NT, But With Windows XP Nope.

The One Good Thing Is They Did Not Lock Me Out Of The Registry.

Once you find it, you need to verify that your ISP doesn't change it.  Most of us have dynamic IP addresses, meaning it will change from time to time.
Services like www.dyndns.org or similar can help you around that issue.  But first you must make sure you can connect through the firewalls at both ends and get it working.

On the Server, open a Command (DOS) window (Start Menu / Run / CMD, then OK button), then type in:

IPCONFIG /ALL

and hit return, it will show you IP details for every network device on the system.

ipconfig will show the internal non-internet ip addresses if he's behind a router though, instead of the one on the internet side that he needs for library server to work.  www.whatismyip.com will give the internet ip that he needs.

Make sure you write down the port number that Library Server is running on.  You'll need that along with the ip address.
Also if you have a firewall at home, you'll need to open that port and forward it to the computer with MC on it.
