Only burns first 5 seconds of each track
« on: August 19, 2005, 06:13:02 pm »

So I downloaded MC 11 and have been ripping my CD collection.  Today I tried to burn an audio CD using the burn CD function and although I don't get any errors, each burn takes about 20 seconds, and I only get the first 5 seconds of each track.  I tried unchecking the "decode files directly to CD" box (since I have an older system).  I've tried unchecking "Enable CD recording on this drive" in the drive properties for Windows XP.  I've tried different write speeds.  And now I have a stack of cds with 50 seconds of music on each.  What am I doing wrong?  Any ideas?

Were they .flac files? I had the same problem trying to burn flacs. If so, you might have to convert them to wav or ape first.

Thanks!  Yeah, they are currently flac files.  Does anyone know if there is any way around converting the files manually?

The Help section for burning CDs seems to say that if you select audio format, the files will be converted to WAV format files before they are written to the CD.  For that matter, the 5 second tracks can be played on a CD player, so they must have been converted.  Is there something I'm doing wrong such that the whole songs aren't being written, or is this just a design flaw in MC11?

Which FLAC decoder plug-in are you guys using?

Is it the oblong's older plug-in (http://www.monsterfang.com/MCinFLAC/)
or the new one made by scthom (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=29211.0)?

It doesn't matter which FLAC decoder you use. You cannot burn CDs with MC 11 if your source files are FLAC, period. You'll need to convert to APE or some other format first.

I asked that because oblong is not working on his decoder plug-in, but perhaps scthom could fix this. You should report here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=29211.0

I don't think it has anything to do with the plugin.

MC gets the decoded data from the plug-in when burning audio CDs. Because the other input plug-ins work it seems to be a plug-in problem.

Well, I don't want to open up a can of worms here. Suffice it to say that I have it on good authority that CD burning from FLAC files is not supported by MC.

After the decoder has done its job MC doesn't care what was the compression format used. As far as I know it doesn't have different interfaces for different decoders. The same plug-in interface is provided for all plug-in makers.

Burning CDs from FLAC files within MC will not work. It has nothing to do with the plugin or the API. I don't think I can be any more plain without spelling things out, so I'll just drop it.

The old FLAC plugin doesn't return proper filesizes, so MC can't burn with it as expected.

Our understanding is that the newer FLAC plugin fixes this.  Please keep in mind that the behaviour of 3rd party plugins is outside of JRiver's control.

I've noticed that here, when MC first encounters a .flac file, it connects to jriver and downloads oblongs plugin.

Now that there is a choice, perhaps the user could be made aware of that?

Matt - Thank you for the information. The newer FLAC decoder must have the same issue, because MC's behavior when burning a CD from FLAC files remains the same. MC still only burns the first few seconds of a few random tracks in the burn list then spits out the CD. I'm running MC v11.0.314 with the most recent versions of scthom's FLAC encoder (v1.5) and decoder (v1.2.1).
