Sony NW-HD3 MP3 player
« on: July 31, 2005, 01:51:24 pm »

I got a Sony NW-HD3 MP3 player for my birthday and would love to load some of my Media Center music on it.    I would prefer not to have to use their software when all my music is right here.
I am lost  as to  having the Media Center recognize it -
handheld? -  tools? - plug in?  then what - then what.
I also just purchased Version 11 and so far I think it's great - I really would like to load this player.
Oh yes, could you explain like I'm a 6 year old.

We have one of these on order so we may be able to get it working soon.

Not entirely sure until we get one. When you connect it, does MC display it under 'Drives and Devices? If so, how is it listed?

I also have been having problems with the same unit (refer to my earlier post).  I have been trying to install the NW HD3, MC recognises it, it comes up as a drive, MC will transfer MP3's to it and you can use IE to copy tracks backwards and forwards.  Sonic stage rips tracks in the Atrac format and transfers them as same to the handheld. Done this way the handheld recognises and plays them.  Despite firmware changes which allegedly make the NW HD3 MP3 compatible (early versions were not), there appears to be no way of changing the Sonic Stage stage to rip/transfer as MP3.  MC does not appear to play the Atrac tracks.  The Sony support site for the unit explicilty states that the unit will not work with software other than Sonic Stage (but they would wouldn't they!). I persuaded my friend who has the unit to buy MC but he currently has to use Sonic Stage until I come up with a solution.

We got our HD-5 this week and it looks like the only way to put music on it that it will recognize is with SonicStage.  SS converts MP3 files to OMA files.

I'm talking to Sony about it, but I'm not optimistic.

Where did you get the firmware upgrade?  From their site?

I understand that the early units had to be returned to Sony for the firmware upgrade.  Later units were 'MP3 compatible'

SonicStage & Sony NW-HD5

Whilst SS does rip to MP3 as far as the HD5 player is concerned it doesn't actually play them.

When you transfer to the player SS "wraps" MP3's in it's OMA format which is how it applies DRM so unless somebody comes up with an OMA decoder MC users are pretty well stuffed I would say.

To those who don't know about the HDx series they do indeed show up in Exploter but the files are listed in a labyrynth of cryptic folders and .OMA names and even if you did know which file was which they would still be unplayable in anything except SS.

When oh when will Sony wake up to the reality of what customers want and stop treating them all as thieves and felons!

Is there any hope that MC will eventually be able to load the Sony Player?

(Or should I rather say that the Sony Player will be able to deal with other software than SonicStage which is complete rubish?)

Faint hope.  Older Sony players may never be supported, but newer ones are more open.

I think Sony knows there is a problem and is moving toward solving it.
