Dynamic range compression
« on: November 07, 2005, 12:29:30 pm »

I've just started using MC at work, pulling content from my MC Server at home.  However, I need to keep the volulme down in the office, and I'm finding that the dynamic range of the streamed audio is too wide for such an environment - when I turn down the volume so the loud segments are where I want them, the quiet segments are inaudible.

What I'd like is a way to compress the dynamic range, to produce something more "muzak-like".  Is there a plug-in that will do that, or can I approximate something similar by playing with replay gain and overflow handling?

Even lower tech: use a light bulb as a power dependant resistors in series with the speaker. Lightbulb resistance changes over a ratio of about 8:1

Suspect its not what you wanted to hear, but sure would compress your DR without any other distortion, and is a simple plug-in, in the physical sense.

Umm, thanks guys, I think.  ::)

Reminds me of the balloon joke - technically correct but practically useless. :P

That sounds promising, but I can't seem to find the "DirectX host" in MC.  I'm running MC11.0.316 - what am I missing here?

Never mind - I found it.  Thanks, I'll give that a try.

Enable the DirectX host in MC.
Find a plugin that has a limiter.
Works like a charm - thanks!  I didn't even have to go looking for a compressor plugin - the DX Host found one already present on my system - I'm guessing it came with WMP.
