OT - Managing DVDs/Videos
« on: December 13, 2005, 09:12:05 am »

Hi guys... I've been contemplating the massive task of backing up my DVD collection for quite a while now. I've struggled with the balance between size/quality/accessibility and have yet to come up with my ideal solution.

Here are my options
1. Encode to divX/Xvid (best compatibility)
2. Encode to mp4 (?better quality)
3. Use ratDVD to catalogue complete DVDs (maintain menus, extras etc)
4. Use DVD-shrink etc to compress to single layered DVD-Rs (but if I'm gonna do this I may as well just use the original disks...)

For the first three I would store files on hard drive, last one they'd be on disks.

As far as using MC11 goes, I can use it to play DVDs or divX files (and looks like mp4 support is getting there as well). So... was just wondering what other MC users do in regard to backing up DVDs?

Haven't tried ratDVD yet. I like the idea of keeping all those extra features, and the fact movies can be tagged with info from the IMDB. Has anyone out there tried it and have any useful feedback? Will I be able to play 'ratted' DVDs through MC11?

Any ideas/suggestions/advice would be great!

I tried Rat-DVD, and if your gonna go that route, you'd better have
some serious processing power... it's very slow...
I'm on a 1700xp which ok i know thats slow by todays standards but
it reckoned on 3.5 days to complete a single DVD, and that I think
was being optomistic...

As a result I never succeeded in ripping one, so no idea if they play in MC  ::)

Ok I converted one last night ~ it took about 7 hours on my machine (which isn't a whole lot quicker than yours :) ). The file plays in WMP but not in MC11...
