Media Center 11.1.83 Beta
« on: December 16, 2005, 05:03:31 pm »

This is a beta version of MC 11.1.  It will work with the same MC11 license that 11.0 uses.  Please post only bugs here.  Anything requiring discussion should go in a new thread.  Non-bug posts will be deleted or moved.

PRICES for MC11.0 and 11.1 are here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23311

The public release version of Media Center 11.0 is available here:
http://www.jrmediacenter.com/download.html (recommended for new users)

This latest build of MC11.1 Beta is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter111083.exe

11.1.83 (12/16/05)

1. NEW: Added ability to select sorting for library grouping views using "View" dropdown. (saves per tab and per view scheme)
2. Changed: The root of the library view navigation history only shows as a link when filtering into a tile.
3. Fixed: "Customize Current View" settings for files at bottom lists in library tile views weren't sticking.
4. Changed: After an import, the actual "Recently Imported" or "Recently Ripped" playlist is shown instead of Media Library with a search filtering to that playlist.
5. Fixed: When switching tracks non-playlist / Playing Now views wouldn't update right away to show the new playing file.
6. Changed: Selections from the files at bottom list of library groupings views now fire to the rest of the program. (for Action Window viewing, statusbar, library tools, etc.)
7. Changed: TV files use the video icon instead of the document icon in file lists.
8. Fixed: The UPnP Server would crash during playback for D-Link DSM-320.
9. Fixed: The rip action window and rip file list wouldn't stay in sync when toggling check boxes for what tracks to rip.
10. NEW: Podcast one-click subscriptions.  You can now subscribe to podcasts by clicking on links prefixed pcast: podcast: or suffixed .pcast .podcast .rss.
11. Changed: The check-boxes in the rip list work more logically when selecting multiple files and then hitting a check.
12. Changed: Tuned some of tree and list icons.
13. Fixed: Thumbnails were not working properly when connecting to Library Server.
14. Fixed: Audible downloads were not integrating into Media Center's UI.

11.1.82 (12/15/05)

1. Changed: Restored "Album Thumbnails" list style.
2. NEW: Added list style to the "View" menu at the top-right of a library file listing.
3. Changed: When playback stops in mini-view, the text updates to the stopped state. (instead of showing the last file that played)
4. Changed: Options to check or uncheck all tracks for ripping added to CD right-click menu.
5. Fixed: Files with invalid internal art (1x1 transparent GIF, etc.) could show as a pink thumbnail.
6. Fixed: Scrollbar arrows would fail to work if the mouse wheel hadn't been used first.
7. Fixed: In rare cases, building multiple thumbnails at once of the same file type could cause a crash.
8. Fixed: In library tiles, when resizing where the "Link" drop button would appear, it wouldn't be removed when making the window larger again.
9. Changed: Library view header looks better with large font selections.
10. NEW: Podcast one-click subscriptions are partially implemented for experimental use only.  You cannot yet actually subscribe with this method.
11. Fixed: Cover art was not drawing properly in visualizations.
12. Fixed: UTF16 MP3 tagging would use the wrong byte order style in some cases. (introduced in 11.1.81)
13. Fixed: In some cases, confirmation boxes from handhelds could pop up behind Media Center, making the player look stuck.
14. Changed: Reworded options that removes files not in sync and added extra warning when enabling it.
15. Changed: Importing of aac and other types was redone.
16. New: MC will use Haali Media Splitter to load files (aac, m4a etc.) if normal way fails. This should simplify DirectShow filter requirement.
17. Fixed: The first image on an iPod could get overwritten each upload. (causing a blank to appear)

11.1.81 (12/14/05)

1. Fixed: Handheld options dialog could crash if no handhelds were detected.
2. Fixed: Clicking "Play" on a library browser tile wouldn't give the focus to the list, so pressing stop and play again would play the tree selection instead of the list selection.
3. Changed: Thumbnail text, player display, etc. use same expression engine as view schemes / columns so more functionality is supported. (also fixes circular reference error when using calculated fields)
4. Changed: Removed "Album Thumbnails" list style -- for grouping views, use the new library browser tile views.
5. Fixed: In CD burn settings, when "use crossfade" setting was disabled, user could still get a message about a direct decoding conflict with dsp settings.
6. Changed: MP3 ID3v2 tagging uses UTF-16 anytime there's a character over 127.
7. Changed: MP3 tag reading now fully supports UTF-8 as well as UTF-16.
8. Optimized: Loading and switching library views is faster.
9. Changed: Clicking "Play" on a view header for a view with no files will show a no files error. (instead of playing other available files)
10. Fixed: Some skins would crop the top and bottom pixels off tree images on selection. (change Tree::Selection::TopBorder and Tree::Selection::BottomBorder to tune 3rd party skins)
11. Fixed: Some MP3's created by Helix in stereo mode would hiccup during playback in MC.
12. Fixed: Erase All thumbnails was not working.
13. Changed: Thumbnail database compacts on shutdown if there is too much wasted space and database is large enough.
14. Changed: MC will warn user if it can not import/play a file by DirectShow method (for aac and other new file formats).
15. Fixed: UPnP Autodetection of server type works better for the DLink DSM-320.

4. Changed: Updated Podcasting tree art slightly.
5. Changed: Reworked logging format to provide finer granularity of timings.

When playing audio files by double clicking on the artist whther in Tiles or Files, the cover art can't be shown as Image in the Action Window.Yet when you select a song by itself that was previously playing w/o art through the aformentioned method, the file is allowed to show art.

"14. Fixed: Audible downloads were not integrating into Media Center's UI."

Could someone explain in more detail what this problem was?  I've been waiting for a couple Audible "fixes" before upgrading, but I'm not clear on whether or not this fix applies to the issues I'm referring to.

Thanks,

11.1.83 (12/16/05)

3. Fixed: "Customize Current View" settings for files at bottom lists in library tile views weren't sticking.

Thank you for working on this :D !!!!!!

Unfortunately it's still slightly buggy.    :o

The customize current view saves correctly now when rightclicking, choosing "customize current view" and applying the settings.  Fine so far.

Here's the new bug....
The root "audio" is highlighted in the tree at the left.
Click the "files" button at the top to show the old panes view that was/is correctly showing the customized settings.
Rightclick in the bottom pane where the songs are and select "customize current view".
Configure columns to show as desired.
Click the "save this view" button.
Choose "For this location and similar locations".
"Yes" I want all child views to look like this.
Click "apply" and "ok" buttons.
Click on the "genre" button at the top.
The files at the bottom do not show the desired customized settings. ?

Start over, this time, start in the Genres view with thumbnails and the files listed at the bottom.
Customize current view.
Click apply button.
Click "save this view" button, choose "all locations" option.
Click "yes", "apply", "ok".
Toggle back to the files view, now it's reset my customized settings in that view that was working all along!   :o

Let me know if any further details are needed.
It 's keeping the settings when switching between the views, but it appears the "save this view" button, it resets the other views to the default instead of the desired settings.

With this version and the last couple my tracks are not being sorted by track # anymore. I have track# in the sort by window but it doesn't work.

Extremely distrubing started with version .183, when i go the my cover art fodler to manually pick a cover to attach to a thumbnail only the first 15 or so or listed and now there is no scroll button to get to the other files in the cover art folder.

It was either that, or you were going to disable the selection. Delighted with your choice. thank you.

This "bug" actually could be converted into a nice feature, ie allowing Video (and of course also the related audio) being played back in a new window with a program of choice (I would opt for ZoomPlayer).

The build-in DirectX player simply lacks all the nice features that are needed for video playback (chapter support, picture controls, to name just some)

Would be great to have that build in as an option

I agree with that. I like to play video via Nero.

using [file size] or time related tags, such as [date] or [last played] in the "customise display" options for the player bar, or in thumbnai text, result in the raw data being displayed instead of the usual friendly formats.

Is there any kind of FormatSize expression available that I've missed?

I have a bug when uploading files to my Zen NX Jukebox. All track numbers are buggered up! Tracks 1-9 are now 51-59 on my handheld. Anything above this gets the track number of 49 meaning that my handheld no longer plays albums in sequence. This wasn't a problem in earlier builds of 11.1 and it worked in 11.0.

Please help!!! ;)

4. Changed: After an import, the actual "Recently Imported" or "Recently Ripped" playlist is shown instead of Media Library with a search filtering to that playlist.

I liked the other way, better... Now if you import new tracks in different sessions during a day, the tracks of the previous import(s) would show up in that list. I don't need to see them again to do my sorting...

Is there anyway for me (or for you ;)) to bring back the old behaviour.

Thanks.

Larry,
Audible revamped their site recently, and, because of the resulting changes on their end, we have to make corresponding changes in MC to support Audible file downloading, auto import to library, and upload to portable devices. We hope to have this resolved asap.

I'm confused.  You said "We hope to have this resolved asap," but item #14 above says "Fixed."  Are you referring to a different issue here, or has this issue already been fixed?

Thanks for clarification,

I don't think this is a new bug, but i thought i'd mention it:

Cancelling the "Downloading album images" window (after a rip) just seems to cause a hang.

Running into some problems using two ipods.  Just updated to 11.1.83 and reinstalled songs on both ipods.  Install on ipod mini went well (profile 1).  Re-formatted 4G ipod and also loaded songs (profile 2).  No problems so far.  Hooked mini back up and it was recognized as a 3rd ipod to the system (profile 3).  I could not erase original profile, so I reinstalled songs again.  (1st profile remains in system.)  Hooked up 4G ipod and got a crash.  (C++ Runtime Error.)  At this point, mini is consistently recognized on 3rd profile and 4G consistently causes Runtime crash.

I’d like to avoid a re-format / reinstall on the 4G – takes 3-4 hours.  I was not sure if this was a bug or ipod problem.  I just shifted the 4G ipod from management under iTunes where I was not having problems (i.e. 4G should be working just fine.) Should I take the nuclear option on the 4G or wait for the next Beta Release?

TIA.

been using the new library browser to root out some choice photos for a DVD slideshow. it really is extremely handy you know.

re. the sorting options under "file" in the top right[/i] hand corner...
again, very useful, but the date option sorts from December through to January. It feels wierd. January through to December would feel a lot more natural and intuitive.

This could be also a solution to get videocrossfading (transitions like in audio options)with another prog. in a new window, or will MC become a video crossfading option in future. Because I plan to import hundreds of DV-Video to tag it with your great database, and I don´t like the interrupts. (Also http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=19711.0  )

You have made some great strides in fixing the iPod Sync issues and geeting closer to the iTunes Sync capabilities.

There are still some bugs though.

A)
1) Format iPod
2) Connect Ipod to MC
3) Name iPod and down load some songs & play lists
4) Switch to iTunes
5) iPod shows as "PList 0"

B)
I can not get MC to Sync JPG Photos to my Ipod - iTunes works fine.
MC says not a supported file format (.jpg)  (Yes, it is a Photo iPod)

c)
I can not get MC to Sync the MP4 video files
It did work 4-5 releases ago but even then it did not put in Music videos section. Now it does not work.

d)
Problems w/ Speed on the ipod
When I loaded 6000+ songs w/ 20+ playlist to the ipod w/ MC the screen change and display was very slow.
Also had many problems w/ freezing and having to reset iPod

No Problems when I use iTunes w/ same set of songs and playlists

In MC configuration I did use MC to Load songs and iTunes to load Photos & MP4's

E)
How do you get the Music Videos to play under Music Videos vs Movies?
Problem is Movies stop at the end - Music Videos move to the next automatically. You can get around this w/ a Playlist by it would be nice to have them show under Music Video's.

MC still has the best utilities to edit & change tags etc.
Keep up the great work. :)

Annoying Bug:

Go to Options -> Encoding

When clicking on the drop down menu at the top "Encoding for:...", it allows the user to type in and edit the text when clicking on the choices, rather than dropping the selections down. The correct form should be just like the second drop down on the encoding page "Encoder:...", right?

I know you can just click on the arrow on the right, but that cuts down on the amount of screen space that can change the selection and it just gets annoying if u just click on the text.

Anyways, great progress on 11.1!

I just got bit by the bug with the image editor not preserving dates and tags again.
I was having so much fun with my photos and the new browsing system I forgot all about it untill I noticed an odd fileshifting thing going on in my "photos by date view"

open an image in the editor, fix red eyes, save file. Great. So simple, and yet, so very effective.
problem: the saved file takes on the date and time it was saved, and all image tags are removed from the file. "update tags from library" puts the <MJMD> tags back to the file, but nothing else. If you can't remember the date, then you're out of luck.

Last night, I also ran into a sporadic problem with the image editor freezing on opening, presumably just before loading the image as it stalls with a black screen, when it's opening under MC in windowed view (great for image previewing) with the "always on top" setting enabled. I was seeing a kind of "irresistable force meets immovable object" thing going on with half the editor on top of the windowed view, and half underneath it.

Cover art hasn't been uploading to the iPod for several builds now.

The YADB database always fails to find a CD, and when the submission window pops up, I can only fill in genre, artist, album and year (but that does nothing).  The window below is blank and I'm unable to label song names either, but clicking done just shows:
Action: Failed
Status: CD not found

I'm not entirely sure if this is a bug or not, but it's been around since I started using 11.1, pretty much.  Sometimes when I experience a crash while MC is running, the view customizations are reverted to the way they were after a fresh install.  It's a real pain to have to get everything to look the way I want every time so maybe there can be a "harder" way for the customizations settings to stick?

A small bug, the tool tip that pops up when you mouse-over a file to show file info no longer shows cover art.

The "set upload volume adjustment" setting still pops underneath MC for me.

I'd like to suggest that perhaps the iPod soundcheck/replay gain issue can be resolved by inflating the soundcheck numbers to be much higher than the standard replay gain numbers?  Right now, it's loud enough at a lower volume without soundcheck turned on but there's not enough volume range.  Of course, it's too quiet with soundcheck turned on.

One last thing: I've never liked the pixel-limit of column widths imposed.  A few of my columns have three or less characters in them (like track number) and even auto-sizing makes some columns skinnier than the minimum width (if you try to adjust these columns, you won't be allowed to get them as small as the auto-size width).  I'd also like column auto-sizing to return to a place deep in a right-click menu instead of on and off in the view options because when I auto-size, I just turn that on and use that as a guide and then I turn it off and adjust the columns more myself (why does the rating column always auto-size to have enough room for 7 stars?).

Actually, I can't find any thumbnails anywhere.  I just tried erasing all thumbnails then rebuild missing thumbnails after reading another post, and while that took a while, nothing changed.  Tile view, album thumbnails, thumbnails, tool tip thumbnail, none are shown.  The only thumbnail is the one shown in the action window under file properties/image.

If you transfer an album to a Zen PMC and the album name has certain characters (&, :, etc) then the album "grouping" is lost on the PMC and the tracks appear at the album level in the PMC browser.

A few bugs:

Cover Art:
Albums that begin with Unicode characters seem to not be recognizing thier own cover at in the cover art folder. I've even tried pasting the cover art into the file itself and its not working. The test example that I'm using is Jay Chou. All of his album titles except for one are in Simplified Chinese characters. His newest album title begins with the number 11. This album recognizes its cover art fine. I would post the example of the name on here but I'm not at my own computer. Anyway, I have about 12 albums that are in Simplified Chinese and only that one album will recognize its cover art. Even after manually copying and pasting the cover art to the cover art folder with the proper naming structure, the files still would not recognize their cover art.

CD Database:
CDs that have been previously inserted and named are showing up, upon subsequent insertions, with all track names missing. All other information is intact, but all track names are blank.

Ripping:
MC will not rip CDs that begin with Unicode characters in the album title. I tried my whole collection of Chinese CDs and none of them would rip properly. MC hangs on the initialization, and on the rare occasion that it initializes, it then takes AGES for it to commence ripping.

And to reference the ripping problem that I'm posting about in another thread. It seems that the problem may be centered around the "Recently Ripped" smartlist and the "Tag Info" window.

brainsoup,

What happens if you transfer the file that has the flawed track number with WMP? Does the track number transfer correctly?

ForsakenArdor,

Cover art hasn't been uploading to the iPod for several builds now.

Please turn on logging for Handhelds and check what it says for 'iPodType: '

The "set upload volume adjustment" setting still pops underneath MC for me.

This should be fixed tonight.

In order to do this we will need to create an interface that allows for manually manipulation of this setting.

If you transfer an album to a Zen PMC and the album name has certain characters (&, :, etc) then the album "grouping" is lost on the PMC and the tracks appear at the album level in the PMC browser.

I am not sure I am following the issue here. Either that or I am unable to replicate it. When I transfer a track where the Album has a ':' in it , it appears correctly under Albums.

no.. I tried that initially as I thought it may circumvent the problem (at least for now!) and if I import the files into the Creative software all the tracks have a track number of 0 although all the other tags are the same. I have tried rebuilding the tags from MC library but to no avail!

The YADB database always fails to find a CD, and when the submission window pops up, I can only fill in genre, artist, album and year (but that does nothing).  The window below is blank and I'm unable to label song names either, but clicking done just shows:
Action: Failed
Status: CD not found

I can't reproduce this. Is it happening for all CDs? Only some?

Again, I can't reproduce this, though it seems related to ForsakenArdor's problem. Is it happening with all CDs or just some?

Just some. Occasionally I'll even get one that has nothing, then it tries to connect to YADB and since im not connected with that PC right now, the connection fails. Then if I click ok, MC dumps to desktop. Again, this only happens occasionally.

It was already turned on, but I couldn't find any "iPodType" strings.  These are all the lines in the log that are between the first and last instance of the word "handheld":

It happens for all CDs that don't already have an entry in CDPLAYER.INI.

Two albums, same name - bug?
« Reply #35 on: December 19, 2005, 03:18:21 pm »

Not sure if this is a bug or "by design". I have two albums that have the same name, "Legend", but they are by different Artists. When I pul up "Legend" from the Album->Files view, the tracks from both albums are combined. Additionally, the Album thumbnails appear in the same spot (underneath each other).  I realize that technically, the tracks do have the same Album name. But clearly they're from different Album/Artists. I'd really like to see albums that have the same name (but by different artists) displayed seperately. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Have you tried changing your view scheme to display the 'Artist - Album' field instead of the 'Album' field?

Hmmm, good idea! I'll give it a try.

Try adding the 'alt+0160' character (without the quotes) to the end of one the album names. This is the 'invisible' letter or character; you won't see it but MC will then see them as two different albums.

BTW, it's also a great way to eliminate names from you desktop icons. Simply rename the shortcut 'alt+0160' and the name disappears.

Thanks, I already added the artist's name to the end of the Album name so MC would distinguish them seperately. What you're describing is a technique called adding a unique key. Would be nice if MC would do that automatically or at least add the Artist's name to the Album internally.

Thanks!

This version works very well with the Roku Soundbridge M1000: it keeps the same port each time it's started up and, so far, all my tracks can be played, which they couldn't be with previous betas. I don't know if this is due to changes in MC or because I'm using the latest beta of the Soundbridge firmware.
