Possible antivirus problems with Norton
« on: December 27, 2005, 06:47:46 pm »

I noticed some problems with playing (mp3's) maybe other media

the problem seems to be Internet Security 2006, once i turn off internet security music in media center plays good.

King--
Were you getting skips in playback, especially when doing minor file management tasks?  This is what I found when I tried 11.1.089, and the primary culprit seemed to be Norton (Symantec) Antivirus "Autoprotect", which is a component of Norton (Symantec) Internet Security.

If this is what you are seeing, then disabling Antivirus Autoprotect should get you up and running, while still maintaining (most) security.  I was fed up enough with av-related crashes that I am trying out AVG freeware, alongside my current firewall setup.  It works a lot smoother, but maybe that's because it's not doing anything useful.

I have been using Nod32 on x64 with great success, although i think PlayingNow folder may also need to be excluded from real-time monitoring; this version of MC feels very "sticky" & sluggish to me. Editing tag fields has major lag.

In Internet Security 2006, go into the Real_Time Scan Setup options and exclude the directory where your ripped MP3's reside. See if that helps.

I got rid of Norton due to **** like this.  I'm very happy with AVG and Kerio (Firewall) is also excellent.  Both are much easier to use and do a much better job IMO than Norton.

I found that Norton products take a ton of cpu power as well... Internet Security had screwed up alot of programs in the past for me.... I switched to Computer Associates and never had problems again........

I posted this information because i have read a few messages lately that say Media Center Is Skipping and this was one of the reasons it was skipping on my computer. there may be other reasons why people are having problems but this is something to check out if you are having similar problems.
