YADB CDDB
« on: January 30, 2006, 10:35:40 am »

Hi,

Lately I have been having problems with gettign the correct tagging from YADB. I insert a Guns and roses CD and it comes back as Jessica Simpson.

Also, a lot of CDs that have tagging info in Windows Media Player show as CDs not recognized.

I am sure that it is because of using different online databases but shouldn't the functionality be available to use more than one database to populate CD titles.

If it is already there then please point me in the right direction.

regards,

Put the Guns-n-Roses CD in the drive, right click on the drive in the tree, and do "Update from online database". Note the exact time and your IP address and post here (or send me a private message) with the info. I'll check out what's going on.

Re: YADB vs. CDDB vs. FreeDB

While we're on the topic....

I know that there were good reasons for dropping CDDB from MC, and now that YADB is stocked up with a lot of data, it's working very well a lot of the time, for me.... CDDB was great because it had so much info, but since it became "the man" it really wasn't worth dealing with any more and I prefer trying to build up the alternatives like MC's YADB and FreeDB.org (which is used by many freeware apps).

However, could MC also add the ability to check against FreeDB, instead of relying on YADB? I don't mean FreeDB instead of YADB -- I mean both working at once, together....

I presume that this has already been discussed on the MC Interact forums in the past in great detail (I remember there being some arguments going on at one point), and I'll try to get around to looking up related posts soon, so you'll have to forgive me if I'm going over well-tread ground here .... (And I don't know if YADB is already supposed to encompass all of FreeDB info or, if not, if there's a reason why FreeDB can't be used in conjunction with FreeDB, etc....)

But I couldn't help but notice that some programs I have that use FreeDB often get CD matches when MC/YADB does not -- and the FreeDB results are frequently more accurate, even when YADB does find the CD info in the database. Of course, the opposite is also often true -- MC/YADB will frequently perform better than or just as good as FreeDB in many cases. The ultimate solution, then, would seemingly be to have MC offer results from both FreeDB.org and YADB, and allow us to upload new CD info to both databases all at once, etc.....full integration, as it were. Is that a possibility?

Some good ideas about this (and a bit of background on the subject, from an MC perspective) can be found here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=30281.0

Bopz also goes into some feature requests regarding this here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=28958.msg208443#msg208443

His (awesome sounding) idea being that MC would not only check multiple databases when looking up CDs and ripping, but would also give MC users multiple options/cjhoices (from multiple sources) when using the right-click "Look up track info on YADB" feature for filling in data on an existing MP3. How great would that be? For me, it'd solve a lot of problems and save a lot of time....

Seems like something along those lines would only serve to benefit everyone -- MC, MC's YADB, MC users, the good folks at FreeDB, and music collectors everywhere.... And it would serve as good back up for when MC/YADB makes a weird/incorrect guess (for whatever reason) or fails to find an obscure indie album, etc....
