Have I got this right:
1.With Normalization (at 100%) the file is replaced with one which is written so as change its overall volume to that which makes its peak volume the maximum possible. Thus all normalized files will have the same peak volume when played with any media player or handheld.
2.With Audio Analysis a header (tag?) (Called "Replay Gain"?) is added to the unchanged file. This contains an overall volume adjustment based on the peak volume and "nature" of the file.
When DSP Replay Gain is enabled in Media Centre it reads this header and adjusts the volume level of the file as it is played according to a combination of the header's properties and a bias determined by the DSP Replay Gain settings. This gives all files the same "subjective" peak volume. But probably not on another media player or handheld.
3. So, to avoid annoying the neighbours or diving for the volume control, I should use method 2 as the files are unchanged?
For my handheld, to avoid having to scrabble for the volume control when mountainbiking, I need to use method 1?
