Interface
« on: February 15, 2006, 05:47:05 am »

At the risk of starting another huuuuuuge MC12 thread, I would just like to mention a couple of things about MC's interface that I think should be tackled before all of the team's energy is invested into any major new features.

Library view is great but still feels like it needs to much clicking. I hope that someone manages to find a breakthu for this viewing method. I use this more than the panes now. Some of the old features from the original library view would be nice, like random thumbnails when the tiles are loaded, and average plays info etc. This info could be put down in the status bar, or in some new floating alpha blended info box.

Most programs that show thumbnails, have a slider to resize them on the fly now. I'd like to see MC follow suit. (how do you spell suit/suite in this case ?)

I hope that "tagging mode" gets integrated into the library view too. Those tick boxes are so convenient. Actually, I've been looking at adobe lightroom and I like the way it approaches tagging. I say, rip the "library" tab out of options and whack it down in "tag info" and change the names to something simpler than "fields". This way, even novices can see how easy it is to make new fields and group them. Also, change "general" and "extended" etc.  into "audio" "images" & "video" like the viewschemes and have them intelligently change (jump to top of list) depending on what viewscheme you're in.

The number one most inconvenient thing for me now, is changing sorting. I want to do it on the fly. For me it isnt something to be buried in options like a setting. I always want to flick between "last played/last imported/date/most played."  Please put a drop down somewhere that allows for this (one for each of the tiles and the thumbnails underneath).

In close competition for inconvenience is the lack of an "auto-orient" feature. The orientation of the images is in the tags. Why should they need to be rotated manually???

The last thing, is simply just to put the "customise current view" presets into the library when the library is backed up or saved. I have lost count of the number of times, just in the 11.1 cycle, when I've had to go through all my viewschemes and smartlists, re-applying thumbnail sizes and sorting, the way i like it.

Please dont think that I'm complaining. I have seen more cool stuff in this ".1" release that has changed the way i use the program than anything since MC9 I think.
You should be congratulated on your podcast support which has come a long way, pretty fast. I never listened to them before they were introduced to media center. Now I cant stop.
Ipod support is very smooth now too. The simplest things, like putting "disconnect" and "recheck synch" in the ipod action window have made life so much easier.

Thanks a lot, and looking forward to the future.

As far as suit/suite you got it right.

Suite (n):
1. A group of related things intended to be used together; a set.
2. A series of connected rooms used as a living unit.
3. Music - An instrumental composition consisting of a series of varying movements or pieces.
4. Computer Science - A group of software products packaged and sold together, usually having a consistent look and feel, a common installation, and shared macros (Microsoft Office); or a collective purpose (TCP/IP).

suit (n):
   1. A set of matching outer garments, especially one consisting of a coat with trousers or a skirt.
   2. A costume for a special activity: a diving suit; a running suit.
   3. Slang. One who wears a business suit, especially an executive.

suit (v): (suited, suiting, suits)

   1. To meet the requirements of; fit: This candidate does not suit our qualifications.
   2. To make appropriate or suitable; adapt: builders who suit the house to the owner's specifications.
   3. To be appropriate for; befit: a color that suits you.
   4. To please; satisfy: a choice that suits us all.
   5. To provide with clothing; dress: The NCOs suited the recruits in green uniforms.

Your use would fall under the third choice of the three above.  Using it as a verb (ie. It suits MC).  The one with the "e" is pronounced the same as "sweet," BTW, whereas the one without the E is pronounced similar to "soot" only with the o long as in "goose".

* glynor Now Listening to "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

It's through the wacky joys of English that we can have sentences such as:

The suite is a sweet set of software which certainly suits the suit.

Ahh, isn't it fun?   ;)
(I thought next we'd tackle your vs you're but that's probably going way too far.)

From Bartleby American Heritage Dictionary:

follow suit 1. Games To play a card of the same suit as the one led. 2. To do as another has done; follow an example.

I think you both misunderstood the original question:

"how do you spell suit/suite in this case". . .

I think he just wants to know how to spell "suitcase".

It's also worthwhile addressing his comment:

"I'd like to see MC follow suit."

Now, I'm assuming here that he means alphabetically.  Well, one way to do that would be to spell "suit" starting with a soft "c", as in "century".  If "suit" were spelled c-u-i-t, then "MC" would follow it alphabetically.

A big "Thank You" to Glynor for showing the way.  The French would feel proud if they were Glynor.
