APE ENCODER VERSION?
« on: February 17, 2006, 01:46:52 am »

Hello,

Am I right that in MC 11.1 the APE encoder is not the latest version?
I would like to rip from MC but Easy CD-DA Extractor uses the newest APE codec.

There are 5 compression modes and in MC 4.
Is there a special reason MC uses an older one?

Thanks for any input.

Best regards,

MC uses Monkey's Audio 3.99 which is the latest stable version. The developer of Monkey's Audio is Matt Ashland who works for JRiver and certainly knows what is the best version for MC. Matt has made a newer version of Monkey's Audio, but it is not a stable version yet (as far as I know).

MC has enough compression mode options. In my opinion Extra High is the highest usable compression mode.

EDIT

It is odd if Easy CD-DA Extractor uses the newer unfinished version. However, because the format is lossless that really does not matter. You can always play Monkey's Audio 3.99 files with newer versions in the future (or convert to a new format).

Alex,

Thanks for this reply. It makes really sense what you say. I will stick with 3.99! :)

All the best,

I think 3.99 is the latest version. There is a new version of the front end (4.01), but the core seems to be unchanged. I just converted some old 3.96 and 3.97 files with the new front end and the resulting files are reported as 3.99.

That is what the info included with the new version says.

Also, I'd be hard pressed to use anything except Normal compression.

I get little space savings at a high cost of encoding time. I'd guess that decoding takes some amount of extra resources and/or time too.

I used previously only Normal. I switched to High because it is fast enough on new PCs. Extra High is usable, but encoding and decoding are noticeably slower and the speed sacrifice is not worth of the few saved MBs.

I think 4BYE meant the Insane option with the fifth compression mode. IMHO, the name tells everything about it.
