I go to my Recently Imported List, and I decide I don't want it to display *everything* I've recently imported, because I've been burning hundreds of Cds lately, I lost a lot when my hard drive crashed. I only want to display the stuff that is actually new, new songs/albums I've bought in the past week or so. So I scroll down and delete the stuff I know I have burned from CD in the past week or so.

I delete them from the PLAYLIST Recently Imported.  Now I find out they are DELETED FROM MY HARD DISC. No warning "Are you sure you want to delete these files from the HD." Nothing. I delete them from the PLAYLIST, and now they are gone!

They are gone from my computer. I have to burn them all again. But I don't even know exactly which ones I deleted, it will take me hours to figure it out. Which Cds did I burn to DVD this week?

I just deleted the entire contents of my 'recently imported' playlist by selecting all tracks and hitting the [delete] key on my keyboard.

no files were deleted from the hard drive

frustration is understandable. once you've calmed down, if you want some help finding out what happened, start over again.

you need to post your system info (click on 'help' then system info, and then paste into your reply.)

it would also be of great help if you explain exactly the steps you took to remove the files from your recently imported list.

are (or were) the files on a network drive?

once these things are known, maybe you will receive some help.

The exact steps I took were to select tracks from the list of Recently Imported, ones I knew were albums I owned and burned, and deleted them. That's it.

1st of all, I'm running the latest release of v11.1, so my test is not valid for you.
Still, I don't ever recall hearing of this behaviour in v11.0, and believe me, there would have been some noise

but how did you delete them?

keyboard? if yes, did you have the [shift] key pressed too?
via the 'delete' option in the context menu?

File Scavenger is a tool that may be able to restore the files if they are deleted from the HD. It is not free, but at least for me it has been worth of its price. You may want to check the QueTek site before writing anything new to your HD.

I feel sorry for you. However, that has never happened to me because of MC. AFAIK, the only way to delete disk files from a playlist is to press the shift key during the delete command. In that case MC displays a confirmation dialog that has three options: "Remove from Media Library", "Remove from Media Library and send to the Recycle Bin" and "Remove from Media Library and permanently delete from disk".

One important question is: Can you reproduce the behavior with some test files? If yes, please post step by step instructions.

I hope you have backups of your files.

Even the programs and the users don't make any errors a HD crash can make all data to disappear forever.

at this point, I'm not totally convinced the files have been deleted. the only place I can do this without a dialogue is by deleting a folder from MC's internal browser, and only then because I turned the dialogue off (don't ask again)

that's why I've been asking how the files were deleted.

(even shift+delete produces a dialogue box before deleting)

I'd be curious to know too, afaik that dialog with the 3 options always pops up when trying to delete anything from the library or even if it's not imported into the library yet.

Well, not exactly the same situation, but I had a similiar experience transfering files to a mp3-device. I built a transfer list of files (drag&drop) and then went to the details view and deteleted some files from the list. Later I found that these files were also gone from my disk and I needed to restore them from my backup. That happend with the 11.0.316 version.
  Now I'm using 11.1.111 and I was not able to reproduce this. Deleting queued files shows a popup to confirm the deletion and after confirming the files are gone from the list but are still found on the HD (as expected).

Restoration is a freeware file undelete tool that works. It doesn't require installation and can be run from a floppy.

I don't get this. I went to Recently Imported, highlighted a bunch of songs, and right clicked and deleted. When I pressed delete I thought, this is not going to delete from hard drive, is it? But I didn't worry about it because I knew I would be asked for confirmation. And I've deleted files from playlists before.

But I wasn't asked.  I just tried to delete another song that way, but it didn't delete.  It deleted from the playlist, but not the HD.

But the songs from last night are definitley gone. I'm looking for them in Explorer and they're not there. I thought back on last night, could I have possibly been in the main list of songs and not the playlist? No, because in that case I would have certainly been asked for confirmation.

Found the missing bands. Every single one of them started with "The".

The Rolling Stones. The Bodeans. The Doobie Bros and you get the idea.

Have no idea why this would cause a problem in MC.

And here is the weird part. The Band, The Beatles, and The Allman Bros were not deleted.
