Moving library and files to another pc
« on: February 21, 2006, 12:46:19 pm »

Hi,

Been using MC for @ two years, but finally have a reason to post.

I have approximately 2600 .ape files on my media server.  I do the "whole house audio" thing with MC and two Maudio D410 soundcards.  I recently got an mp3 player.  So I copied all my .ape files to a second pc and converted them to mp3.  That machine got re-purposed and now the files are on yet a third machine.

What I would like to do is make a backup of the library on my media server and load it on the machine with the mp3 files.  The library has been developed and tweaked over the last couple of years so it is important that I be able to use the data with the mp3 files on the new machine.

I know how to load the library zip on the new machine.  I also know that all the file paths will be wrong.  I am looking for the best way to put the files and the library back together again.  I have not gone any further than copying the mp3 files to the new machine and installing MC11.  I have not imported any media into MC or loaded the library so everything is fresh.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

M.

Mithrandir:

I had to do the same thing- and had the same questions. here is how I worked it out.

First, make sure to Back Up your library. And do that somewhere new. Move your media files to your new location. Suppose this is your new structure:

\\Media\Music\(And files go here)

I made a :

\\Media\Data\Library

and I moved the existing library there. Make a new Library, and load this new location. Back this one up, too! Now, highlight your whole library, and in Library Tools, do search and replace. Supposing your files were at D:/music/(Files), just do a search/replace of

D:/music

and

\\Media\Music

Now, all the library points to the new location! Should work.

Good Luck!

Goto: Library Tools>Find and Replace. Do as Carfac said.

Mithrandir,

Besides the base folder change you can use the tool for applying the library information to the new file format simply by replacing ".ape" with ".mp3".

I have written specific instructions a couple of times. You may want to make a forum search.
