media center freezing / really slow
« on: March 13, 2006, 09:20:38 am »

Media center frequently will stop responding when i am using it for periods of 10 seconds or so.  If i double click on the song or scroll or close the program nothing happens, then 10 seconds later the program reacts.

I tried reinstalling, and updating to the latest beta with no luck.  I am running a dual core machine (computer being slow shouldnt be the problem) and i tried to only use one cpu.  I also tried switching the playback output mode from wave out to directsound.

is this a problem with my media library?  I have about 4000 songs.

Do all your other programs work correctly?, sounds like it might be a bad sound driver or something but not sure.

All other programs seem to work fine.  I think I will try going back to media center 11 to see if that helps.

Please take a look at this thread for possible problems with other software or hardware drivers.

After a long hiatus (due mainly to life and the frustration of a hard drive crash that took most of my music library with it, I finally reinstalled MC and started my library from scratch. I started with pictures, and finally got my 9000 picture library all organized. MC was a dream.

Next I decided to start on videos. It was then that MC seemed to really slow down and become rather unresponsive. It seemed especially bad when I was dealing with Quicktime files.

As an experiment, I just removed all Quicktime files from my library to see if things would clear up. For the most part, it seems like they have. MC still is a lot slower dealing with videos than it is with pictures (I don't have any audio files imported yet), but Quicktime seems to be the worst.

Can anybody confirm this on their system? I'm just mostly curious because I'm also currently running this on my laptop (which is only a 1.6 Ghz Pentium M with 512MB RAM) and my library is on a USB 2.0 hdd. So it may just be this particular setup that's causing this.

Try a test with a local library.  We've seen a bug in a USB drive driver (Maxtor) that was fixed by updating the driver.

Make sure Quicktime is up to date.

I think I have determined the problem is somewhere with my library.

11.0.316 cant play a 11.1 library, but ran an old one without problems.

went back to 11.1.143 and could play an older library with no problems.

as soon as i loaded the backup of my real library, media center freezes.

do i have to just go back to an old backup or can this be fixed somehow (without losing changes to my library in the last few months)
