Volume works for me with or without ASIO and on both analog and digital outputs.  I'm using an M-Audio Detlta AP2496 card.

MC has two volume control options. You need to use the Internal option with ASIO.

Right-click the speaker icon besides the volume slider and select "Internal Volume (audio only)" or select it from the top menu (Player > Volume).

umm, I'm using ASIO4all, everything shows chipper, and I can still adjust volume both internally and externally.  Which bit am I missing?

Realize you are only getting true bit-perfect with MC's internal volume set to 100%  The way to test is to play back a wav-wrapped DTS 5.1 file.  If you're receiver locks onto the DTS signal you have bit-perfect.  If you get noise (careful with the volume control while testing this!) you don't.  Obviously this doesn't matter if you don't care about the whole bit-perfect thing.

Sorry to stray off course, But I just got a card that is capable of ASIO, (Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty) what exactly is the bennefit of ASIO4All?

If your new card also came with Creative's ASIO drivers there is probably no benefit to using the ASIO4ALL drivers. I believe the ASIO4ALL drivers are more for cards that don't include ASIO drivers from the factory.  That being said, Who knows? The ASIO4ALL drivers might perform better than some factory drivers
