MC doesn't like Frozen Ghost?
« on: March 24, 2006, 07:50:24 pm »

MC has failed to import 42 of my files.  One artist it chokes on is Canadian rock band, Frozen Ghost.  As you can see below, the o's in their name have "macrons" in them.  :'(

MC hates spooky things. :P

Seriously, more information is needed. For example:

Did you try another filename? What is the complete filename path? Does this happen only with m4a files? Are some other m4a files fine? What is the encoding format -  AAC or ALAC? What program and settings you used for encoding? Did you tag the files with a separate program? What program? Have you installed iTunes or QuickTime? Have you enabled DirectShow playback in MC Options > Playback > DirectShow playback settings? Have you installed DirectShow filters & splitter for mp4/m4a/aac? Are the files located on a network drive? If yes, what is the operating system of the network server or is it a Linux & Samba based NAS device? Could you post your System Info from the MC Help menu?

100% of my files are AAC.  95% of them were encoded with iTunes; the others with RealPlayer 10.5.  RP choked on the same Frozen Ghost files as well. I use Tag&Rename and iTunes for tagging.  The files are stored on an external non-networked drive.  My output mode is DirectSound.
Here is the results of my most recent file import:

I tried this import with the DirectShow playback enabled (It is a different thing than MC's Direct Sound output mode):

MC imported the file just fine.

This import was without the DirectShow playback. I changed the file extension to mp4 and unticked the DirectShow option to make MC use QT instead of DirectShow:

This time MC failed to import the file.

iTunes can import the file, but QuickTime Player has a problem with the folder path. It shows this: "Error -108: an unknown error occured". When I moved the file outside the folder path to the drive root also QT Player could understand and play the file.

I think the problem is related to the QuickTime filename (& path) limitations.

You may want check this thread out for information about DirectShow playback in MC:

iTunes' filename path limitations has always bugged me, but why should I have to jump through hoops just to import AAC files that play back just fine?  ?
I re-tagged all of the non-Frozen Ghost files in iTunes and now they have all been imported in MC.  It looks like I will have to drop the macrons on the o's if I expect to have Frozen Ghost in my MC library.  :(

I think the alternative DirectShow playback system would help. It also makes possible to analyze the m4a/aac files and use Replay Gain and other DSP options on playback.
