Feature request: overwrite files on sync.
« on: April 04, 2006, 08:08:15 am »

Now that lyrics support is available for ipods, and for other reasons, there should be a way for MC to overwrite files when syncing to an ipod or other external device.

There might be a way already but I could not find it.

I have a mix of lyrics\covers and no lyrics covers...

Do I have to remove existing files or wipe out the ipod to replace the files that now have lyrics?

Could MC add a "overwrite" option for such a purpose?

Thanks  ;D

I agree that this is very necessary.  MC should force a sync with any file where changes have been made to the lyrics and album art.  I too am constantly adding lyrics and album art as I go along, and right now I have to initialize and resync the entire device everytime I make a batch of changes to either of those fields.

On a similiar note, if I recall correctly, MC also does not force a sync for image files where you have made changes to the album field.  This is very important, since this is the field you use to organize images on the iPod.  This too needs to be considered when forcing a sync along with the lyrics and album art.

I second the seconding of that request.  I too add a lot of lyrics and album art data to my collection, and would like them to be updated on the iPod as that's done.

I'm glad i'm not the only one.

I think MC is awesome... on everything else but for the Ipod syncing... it is just not all there.

I can't see re-initializing every time there's a batch of new files that are updated etc..

Right now I'm stuck with a couple of thousand tracks that already had Lyrics and Album covers that do not show up in MC.

And albums that were already there, I have tried deleteing them from the Ipod and using MC to sync, but he lyrics still do not show up...

For now I think I'll stick with Itunes for ipod management, and use MC for everything else.

The only good part, is that I can drop & drag files from MC to Itunes.

Olarte,

I have come to realize, from my own past experiences, that syncing to the iPod from both MC and iTunes seems to create issues that keep MC from syncing properly.  I first realized the problem when cover art support was added.  Even when I deleted a specific file and resynced it, the cover art would not work properly.  I then had similiar issues with photo syncing.  However, once I initialize the ipod (by right mouse clicking it in the tree and selecting "initialize) and resync onto a fresh iPod, things seem to work proplerly.  I have even stopped syncing it with iTunes, which winds up messing up other things like video files on the iPod.

I read that you were about to re-initialize.  I hope this works.  If it starts working properly for you after you initialize and sync, I predict that you will be able to add other new files with art and lyrics and it will work properly.  I mean to say that you may only NEED to resync the first time.  However, if you are like me and make lots of changes to lyrics at a time, and do not necessarily keep track of each individual file you change, you may have to initialize and upload them all again at once.

I really hope that MC will be able to fix this by forcing a sync to files with changes in cover art, lyrics, and photo album very soon to avoid this in the future.

Thanks micahmj11 for your advise... I will re-initialize tonight and see what happens.

Yes it would be great if they MC had an option to overwrite files, detect changed files etc...

How is MC for Photo and Video files? I'm not too big on that for my Ipod but want to know if there are any gotchas there, as once I initialize I don't want to go back to Itunes.

Also, if I do make changes later on (which i'm sure I will) can I replace the files changed if I first delete them from the Ipod?

Is the only reason to re-initialize later on is if I don't know what has lyrics etc? I plan to change whole albums or artists so it would be easy enough to check if they show if the art\lyrics are already there via MC, if not delete and re-ad those specific files.

one more thing, do you know if the album art still shows the MC logo if it does not exist? I read this in another thread but I think this was old news.

Your info was more encouraging the what I've gotten so far.

Thanks again... 8)

I may be wrong, but what I think will happen in your case is this:  Once you initialize and resync your files...from then on you should be able to make changes to lyrics and cover art in files, delete them from the iPod and then sync them back to the iPod.  Those files should then work on the iPod with cover art and lyrics.  I know it will with cover art, I have yet to try it with the lyrics.

I suggest that you first initialize the iPod and clear out whatever problem you are currently having.  Then sync just a few songs...maybe an album or two including some files with and without art and lyrics.  Then go ahead and add some lyrics or art to some of those files in MC.  Try deleting those files off of the iPod and the syncing them back on and see if it works.  If it does, you should be set.  Then simply reload your entire library back onto the iPod.

As for photos and video, it is still a mixed bag.  For the most part it is pretty sweet.  Using MC for photos on the iPod is so much better than iTunes.  iTunes will simply sync whatever photos you have in a specific folder, and arange them by whatever subfolders they are located in.  With MC, you can edit and sort and manage all of your photos and easily sync them to the iPod.  However, due to limitations of the iPod photo database, you cannot sort them on the iPod via playlists, or with most of the commonly used tags likes people, places, or events.  Instead, MC will sort your photos on the iPod with the album tag.  That is not too bad though.  Also, MC will upload the MC logo as the cover art for files that have none.  All of your files will have an image...either the cover art, or the MC logo.

Video support also needs some work.  Right now MC will upload most iPod formatted videos to the iPod, but it does not yet sort them into the correct iPod menus (like TV Shows, Movies, Video Podcasts, etc.)  iTunes would sort all of your tv shows in order by show name, and season, all under the TV Shows menu.  Instead, MC will clump all of your videos together indiscriminately in the Movies menu.

Another problem is MC does not like m4v files which you download from iTunes.  It may just be a problem I am having, though.  Once an m4v file is in MC, it will upload it to the iPod.  The trouble I am having is that I cannot get MC to import it.  It does not work if I select the import media option and MC scans the drive, and it does not work if I drag and drop the file into MC.  I have to work around it by importing another file, and then manually changing the file name and path in MC to reflect the filename and path of the m4v file i want.  Then, MC has control of it and will allow me to manage it and eventually upload to the iPod.

To sort my videos, I have created a playlist group called videos.  The group is filled with smartlists...such as movies, music videos, trailers, video clips, and a different smartlist for each television show I collect episodes of.  The iPod will then display each of these playlists as individual menus on the iPod.

I am very happy with the new iPod features MC 11.1 has to offer, and I look forward to further improvement and enhancements.

Hi micahmj11

Well, I took your suggestions and finally I'm all set.

Funny part is I tried 11.1.62 and that did not do the trick for me...

This was even after wiping everything out and initializing... for some reason after I installed 11.1.63 finally Lyrics and Album covers started to work as expected.

And yes deleting files that do not have lyrics\art, then syncing the ones that do does the trick.

I'll try photos next but Music is the main thing for me.

I actually use the Palm TX for Videos and photos. I call it the world's smallest flat screen... It is awesome for video, in widescreen and pretty good battery life. I can watch a couple of hours without the battery draining much.

Anyway, thanks for your help.

And yes let's keep the request for Overwrite files on sync going...
